The wick appears to be expanded aluminum or some like material. After a year’s use it's coated with a yellowish/green funk that I have not been able to remove. (The wick is a "Lifetime" deal and finding a replacement has been no easy task.) I have tried Bleach, CLR, ammonia, and several other cleaners to no avail. Herself refuses to use the wick due to its unsightly appearance, proclaiming "It can't be healthy if it looks like that! I though about boiling it in an attempt to dissolve the deposits. Any thoughts???

Vinegar or ZAP.

I complained that my disposable wicks didn't perform as well as new ones after cleaning with vinegar. Well, I was reusing the vinegar too many times. When I used fresh vinegar the cleaned ones perform as well as new ones. Submerge the wick in the vinegar for an hour or so.

If vinegar didn't work I would use ZAP or similar oxalic acid preparations. They dissolve hard water deposits very well, but might also dissolve my fabric-like disposables. I think your metallic wick would be alright.

Good luck, and let us know the outcome. :)
