Cat "toilet training".

Catzilla is driving me nuts.

She is going through a bag and a half of litter a week and still stinks my house up.

I once had a cat (Sam) that decided on his own to use the toilet. He was an inside/outside cat and if he didn't get let out when he wanted out he went and used the toilet just as he had seen our children do.

Well, The Hideout is not an environment that offers long life to outside cats, and Catzilla has been inside for 12 years, so outside is out.

I once saw a product on TV that trained cats to do the same as Sam. It would save me a lot of trouble if I could teach Catzilla to do that.

Any experience with this? Any suggestions?

Yes.... change the cat's diet. Jenn and I changed our 2 house cats diet over to NUTRO Natural Choice Complete Care adult cat food. That change alone greatly improved the litterbox odors .Actually no smells in the house now. I will admit they were reluctant at first to the new food change but they are fine now.

Warning Diamond brand cat food will make the box stink so bad your neighbors will complain.

Being a 12 y/o cat I don't know how he would respond to the toilet training.... but here is a link: http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html

My cats will not respond to the training since they run the house!!

Bob

If other options fail JB, get one of these.

http://cgi.ebay.com/360-mghr-PURIFI...849104694QQcategoryZ41389QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Run it for 24 hrs and I guarantee you, you will not bet able to detect that a cat had ever been in your house. They are also great for clearing autos of various and sundry odors including stale cigarette smoke.

I was just inside a home yesterday. They have four indoor cats (did not know it initially). All I noticed as I walked in was the pleasant odor of Ozone. I asked the neighbor why he was using it. He explained re: his 4 cats. Not the slightest indication of their existance in that house.

Re: Cat "toilet training".

Update if you go to the Nutro web site you can get a coupon for free cat food and free dog food. Takes some time but worth it. Jenn said if you don't need the dog food contribute it to your local shelter and she highly approves of the name Catzilla :D

free food http://www.nutroproducts.com/yourfamily/

Bob, Jenn, Velcro, Pye, and Cooper (black lab)

Our cat was the same way with purina. We switched her over to science diet and there was a big difference with the oder and the cats fur as well. She is super soft now and her coat looks lots better. Cant teach an old cat new tricks.

Re: Cat "toilet training".

Thanks, guys.

I am gonna try the training. If that works I will work on flushing. :)

Bob, tell Jenn that the name came because she is agressively hostile to all humans other than JB, and she fetches me a whack now and then if I displease her. Her name was Zoom until one of my grandbuddies, nursing a shredded finger, suggested the name chamge.

I've thought of toilet training our cat too - I was going to purchase one of these: http://catseat.com/ but just haven't got around to it yet.

From what I read, do NOT train the cat to flush - they might be entertained by it and flush over and over and over again ... :)

The box odor usually isn't that bad around here. We feed the cat dry Eukanuba brand food, use clumping litter, scoop it every day, and change it about once a month. When it starts to stink, we sprinkle some baking soda in it.

Re: Cat "toilet training".

Be sure the training box on the toilet isn't a flimsey crinkly plastic job. I made that mistake and it scared my cat and he wouldn't go near a toilet as long as I had him.

If the toilet doesn't happen, give SweatScoop a try, it is litter made from a wheat byproduct. It clumps both #1 and #2, really absorbs odors and lasts a long time as it clumps so well the rest stays fresh and doesn't really need changing just scooping. It's expensive but lasts. I have three cats and this is the best litter I've found by far.

If the toilet does work out for the cat you will have to get a waterdish cause you won't want to keep drinking out of the cat's toilet.

Two of my cats are monsters with company too, I really have to keep an eye on them or lock them in the basement when people come over.

JB & jsfinn
Keep us posted on those seats and how they work.
If I end up getting one and it works with our 5 cats WOW

You two are getting post of the year award for 2006! Plus a gift coupon of your place of choice!

JB we use a different brand of clumping cat litter and it works out the same. We also use only dry food and we have no problem with poop or pee smell! Three large cat litter boxes in one room and 5 cats with no smell from them. It is awesome!

But we must scoop them out every night. And we would really like to get away from that!

Link

I went through a few different brands of food before I found one that didn't stink up the house. I/she has Iams dry and 1 tsp. of wet food per day and this keeps the odors to a minimum. My cat drinks from the toilet so I'm not sure about having her poop in her watering hole... I'd be buying kitty breath mints too!

Stuart MacLean has a great tale he tells about toilet training the cat...
http://www.cbc.ca/vinylcafe/cds.html
on his disc "odd jobs"
I wish I could stream it somehow...no pun intended

I had a cat when I was a young boy that used the toilet one day all by herself... my mother and i made such a fuss when we saw it going on...
we should have just ignored her... she never tried it again...

Re: Cat "toilet training".

Well, If you had asked this question in a couple months, I may have a better answer for you.

But, I AM in the process of toilet training (For a human toilet) my two cats, ages 3 years and 5 years. The older is a girl, the younger is a boy, both fixed from 6 months or so old.

They are doing really well.. An adult cat CAN BE TRAINED to use the toilet.

Just show her where the toilet is. I've found that technique to work in the past with litter boxes so a toilet should be no different. Just set her down on the seat. She will take it from there.

Re: Cat "toilet training".

I did get the training seat and Catzilla was using it in 48 hours. Should have updated this.

Catzilla passed away in the summer of 2006 from cancer.

Current cat is "Miss Kitty", who has been in the family for 18 years. She won't (or can't) jump up to the seat. She is on IAMS weight control dry food. Odor is not a problem with "Fresh Step" clumping litter.
