I have been using diesel in the old oil furnace until the gas one gets installed it runs out a lot so I prime the pump and pushed the red reset button (was told how to do that in this forum) the motor starts running then goes off a few times, eventually oil starts coming out of the loosened nipple under the fuel pump and then the burner kicks in and I tighten the nipple. This time when hit the red button nothing happens no pump just silence. Also the reset stays down untill i pull this small plastic leaver just above it. I have no idea what to do next.

Thank you
Rob

Don't want to overlook the obvious, but if this is a forced air furnace, have you got the thermostat set up nice and high? I mean, is something actually calling for heat?
The lever is there to manually test the reset system (IE, the red button). If you flick it and the button pops out, it's working properly.

I take it there's no buzzing or anything going on? Have you checked the furnace switch, breaker and fuse?

Re: cold again, oil furnace reset trouble

roboat, I have an old Magic Chef oil burner. In the beginning of the season, I get the same problem for the first few cycles. I have noticed that if the motor is hot, it will not reset until it has cooled down.

If you are loosing your prime, then you have a fuel line leak or a worn out pumnp. The only time that you should loose your prime is when your tank runs empty. Have you changed your filter lately? It should be mounted on the line coming out of your tank. How long ago has your nozzle been changed? It doesn't take much for them to get clogged.

Once every 2 years, I change my filter, replace the nozzle, and clean/adjust my ignition rods. It hasn't run much this year. I have only burned about 30 gallons so far since September. Of course my woodburner has been running pretty much full time.

BTW, there is a reset on your highvoltage transformer. If it is tripped, it will not do anything at all either.

Thank you everyone! I did forget the obvious and forgot to put the thermostat up.
I think it must of been a frozen brain.
