I've got to a certain point on the remodel of my basement. This pretty much deals with the room needed around my pool table. There is a jack post in the way by about 4 and half inches. I would like to move it over by at least 5.

The jack posts are centered 8' apart. On top of these posts rests a beam that is 8'x8"x4 3/4". (3 2x8's nailed together. Above the beam is the first/ground level floor. On it is a wall that seperates the kitchen/dinning room from the living room. Above it in the attic is truss construction. With this type contstuction, I've been told that the beam/posts are mainly to support the floor and wall above it and not the roof load.

I need some ideas on how I can achieve my objective withou going with a metal "I" beam.

My one choice that I would like to do is get four 2x10x16' planks. Then put two on each side of the existing beams. Then screw/glue and bolt them onto the existing beam. Then hopefully be able to completely remove the post that is in the way. I am aware of preloading the beam before mechanically fasting it to the existing beams. This will help prevent any settling of the new beam.

My second option would be to just get three 2x8x12 and mechanically fasten them to the exisiting beam and put the post under the new beam. It will off set by about 4 and half inches. That is about all I need to have the room for certain shots on the table.

The floor joists meet in the center above the existing beam. They are tied together with splices to tie them together. Should be able to see them in the pics.

The pics should help show what my problem is. I added a few to show what I have done so far.

Thanks in advance. Mz Mayfloat is tired of me becoming a couch potatoe and wants the basement done. Who has time to do that when there is pool to be played?
