Need Support ?

I've got to a certain point on the remodel of my basement. This pretty much deals with the room needed around my pool table. There is a jack post in the way by about 4 and half inches. I would like to move it over by at least 5.

The jack posts are centered 8' apart. On top of these posts rests a beam that is 8'x8"x4 3/4". (3 2x8's nailed together. Above the beam is the first/ground level floor. On it is a wall that seperates the kitchen/dinning room from the living room. Above it in the attic is truss construction. With this type contstuction, I've been told that the beam/posts are mainly to support the floor and wall above it and not the roof load.

I need some ideas on how I can achieve my objective withou going with a metal "I" beam.

My one choice that I would like to do is get four 2x10x16' planks. Then put two on each side of the existing beams. Then screw/glue and bolt them onto the existing beam. Then hopefully be able to completely remove the post that is in the way. I am aware of preloading the beam before mechanically fasting it to the existing beams. This will help prevent any settling of the new beam.

My second option would be to just get three 2x8x12 and mechanically fasten them to the exisiting beam and put the post under the new beam. It will off set by about 4 and half inches. That is about all I need to have the room for certain shots on the table.

The floor joists meet in the center above the existing beam. They are tied together with splices to tie them together. Should be able to see them in the pics.

The pics should help show what my problem is. I added a few to show what I have done so far.

Thanks in advance. Mz Mayfloat is tired of me becoming a couch potatoe and wants the basement done. Who has time to do that when there is pool to be played? :p

Re: Need Support ?

Heres an Idea
In the past I've taken a steel C-channel and thru bolted it to the existing beams(3-2x8's).The steel is stronger and probaly the same price or a little more.I think the C-channel should be a minium of 12" and at least 3/8 thick. As a general Contractor for 25 yrs in the toughest state (Ca),This it the direction I would go.
Just my .02

I know you don't want steel I beams but how about sandwiching the wooden beam between two pieces of steel plate?

Re: Need Support ?

Thats what the C-channel is used for(we sandwich them around the old wood and sometimes we do only one side),The steel plate wont work,Its not the proper way to do this project,If you ever go to sell this house and you get called on this beam, you need this setup to calc-out with an Engineers numbers, then that releases all liability back to the engineer. As a new home developer in a sue happy state we try to CYA all the time.
Remeber the saying"measure twice and cut once"
Well Just remember this:
"Do it right the first time and you don't have to look back"

Re: Need Support ?

Good idea on the "C" channel. Now the question is, should they span the whole 16' from post to post? This would let me completely elimanate the post that is in the way. If I go this route, I would do both sides of the beam.

I just hate to do all this work just to get clearance for just a few shots on the table. However, it is the only place in the basement that I can get the proper room that I need.

Re: Need Support ?

Hey Dan, the roof is a truss roof on 2' centers,
The beam runs down the center of basement. It supports both sides of the floor plus an interior wall above it. Jack posts are on 8' centers. The beam itself is 3 2x8x8's nailed together. The beams sit end for end on the posts. By looking at a lot of the timber in the house, each piece has a number on it. I'm thinking that this was a kit style house. I'm hoping that 10" channel on both sides will do the job. Going to a 12" is going to make it a head buster. I don't have the nice 8' ceiling in this basement. Anything lower than 10" is going to make it a problem for those over 6'.

I'm not in a big hurry at this time. Its been sitting like that for the last year or so. I'm just getting pushed by the wife to get it done. Thanks.

Re: Need Support ?

I Agree that Channel Iron will No Doubt carry the load, when Bolted to both sides of your wooden beam.......
6" Channel would be Plenty,...And,.. It'll Hide right up in beside the wood.....
After All,.... The 2X8s are only 7 1/2" Anyway....

For that matter,.... 1/4"X 7" Flat Plate bolted to each side will do the Same Thing,......
It's the Big Flat surface of the Channel Iron that'll be carring the Load, Anyway...... ;)

Re: Need Support ?

Thanks again for the ideas. I was told that a 6" I beam would be good to completely replace the wood one. I don't want to go that route of removing and replacing. I will probably will go with the 8" channel. I've got the room to squeeze it in between the air duct and the existing beam. Now to call my favorite scrapper and see what he has in his stock pile.

I'll be taking some pics of the progress and the areas that still need to be done. It is slow going, but once the fridge is in and the longnecks are closer to the project, it may go faster. :D
