I just got a Taurus 454 Raging Bull and love it. It's like shooting a .44 with a little extra recoil. I love the .44, it is nothing to shoot all day long for me, but I have never shot the S&W 500. Anybody here have real world comparison experience between the two? What loads are available for the 500, and how is the accuracy? The 454 seems to be accurate at distances normally reserved for rifles. One main difference is that the Taurus has factory compensator vents and S&W does not; though S&W has a neat compensator that attachers to the muzzle. Anyone fire the S&W with/without the compensator?

The 500 smith will kick you thing in the dirt! It is not fun to shoot more than a few times with the heavy bullet loads. Plus the gun is around a thousand bucks new, and the bullets are high as well. But dont get me wrong, it is one bad sob, and looks super cool.

CPJ, I wonder why S&W didn't put a compensator on the gun like Taurus. Being new to big bore handguns, I am no expert, but I really think that the compensator on my 454 makes a difference. I guess I'll get up with the Bro-in-law and shoot his 500 to see for my self. My brother says it will crease your scull if your underestimate it.

I once fired a freak single action revolver in .45-70.

When my hearing came back they told me that I hadn't really blown my hand off, it just felt that way.

Nothing heavier than .44 mag since, and nothing heavier than .357 mag or .45 ACP in the future.

Handguns, that is.

Not familiar with the 500 (but I do want one), I have shot a .480 Ruger quite often. It doesn't have a comp, but doesn't really need one to be controllable. It's more of a hard "push" vs. a big kick like some loads offer.

One key to shooting big loads, is to grip firm, but yet stay semi loose in your elbow and shoulder. This lets your body absorb recoil better. A straight wrist, straight elbow, and locked shoulder is just going to hurt! I have a legal, pistol grip, 18 1/2" barrel 12 guage pump I shoot 3 inch magnum loads in just to show people it can be done. As long as I grip tight to maintain control, and semi relax the rest of my body so the recoil is absorbed, it doesn't bother me a bit. Kinda neat to cut down a 5" tree in 2 shots too!
