I'm afraid my shop refrigerator has shot cr4ps. I need a little wisdom from yall to troubleshoot the compressor....heres what I've done so far....I discharged the starting capactior and removed it from the compressor to check continuity on the terminals of the compressor. There are 3 terminals, a common, a start and a run. What I need to know is should there be continuity between all 3 or just 2. I have continuity between the start to run terminals but no continuity between the common to start terminal or common to run terminal.

What happened was I went down to the shop to work on on of the wheelers and the breaker for some of the plugs in the shop had tripped. I reset and it tripped again. The fridge was the only thing on that line that required any power so I unplugged it and reset the breaker and it stayed. Didn't loose anything cause nothing was in it but beer and it was still cold... :)

I'm certainly not a fridge mech, but at least here is something I did with an a/c window unit.Same thing, blowing the breaker.Opened her up,gave a good cleaning (mucho dusto),and all was well.Give it a shot

DHP

Yes you must have continuity from all three terminals. You have a open circuit. Sorry

From the common terminal with your meter to the start terminal will have more continuity (more resistance) than too the run terminal . So you have a open circuit.

Have you checked the continuity to ground? Usually on an open circuit the compressor will not run or trip the breaker. Shorted to ground will definitely trip the breaker. Does it have a starter relay? Sometimes they will short tripping the breaker also. That is a cheaper fix than the compressor.

If you have continuity between start and run, The windings are probably O.K. The reason you don't have it at common is there is an overload between the windings and the common terminal that has opened up. This probably isn't repairable if it is inside the compressor because you cant get at it. Normal compressor readings would have the most resistance between S and R because you are measuring both windings. Next would be between C and S with C and R being the seast resistive. The measurement between C and S + the measurement between C and R should equal S to R. Mayfloat is right if you show any resistance to ground the windings are starting to go and probably caused the overload to trip.

Mayfloat has a point. Pull the compressor relay first. Than try the continuity tests. terminal to terminal you must have continuity. Terminal to ground you must have NONE. If the unit fails any of these tests you have a shorted compressor or a compressor with an open winding. Unless you know how to braze, evacuate and recharge (and have the equipment and R12 freon) you are pretty much out of luck. Replacement compressors are usually too expensive anyway. If you really want to fix it look on e bay. I have purchased Sanyo small refrigerator compressors there before for cheap.

Well, looks like we'll be saying words over the old gal. She's been a goodun bought it new 25 years ago and this is the first time she's put me down. I guess the next quest is how to get rid of the damn thing. Thanks for all the replies. I guess I'll be watching the paper for a good used one. Thanks again.

Check the want ads in the local newspaper. Can get a beer cooler (like 12-14 cu ft) for $50 if you are not pickey about auto defrost and cosmetics. BTDT

Mark

Another good place to look for a replacement is the back room (clearance department) of any good appliance store. They usually have seconds and floor demos that are slightly scratched and dented for a lot less then what new ones cost. That's how I brought my garage fridge. ;)

As it stands right now, I've encroached on her fridge space in the house and she's barkin about it. She's even gone so far as to find me several in the classified ads to go look at and even called the city and county to find out where I can haul the old one to get rid of it. :D Time is on my side.

When I made mention about taking the little dorm fridge thats in my son's room to the shop, I was shot down in flames and lost part of a butt cheek on that suggestion.
