Need ladder suggestions

I have a VERY substantial fiberglass extension ladder. It's so substantial, it nearly whips me whenever I need to use it.

Anyway, whenever I need to clean out the gutters, I extend it and lean it on the gutter. As I climb, the fiberglass ladder and the metal gutter form no friction and the ladder dances around on the edge of the gutter. I'm not young and don't need no dancin' ladders.

I'd like to glue some rubber strips on the edge of the portion of the ladder that rests on the gutter to stop the dancing and sliding around.

My questions are, what would be an appropiate material and what should I glue it with?

Re: Need ladder suggestions

Those standoff brackets like Bob has suggested are excellent. The ladder can bridge across a window opening plus they are less likely to collapse the gutter.

Another cheapo option is an old inner tube. Just wrap the rubber around the area that the gutter is going to make contact. Of course make sure that the rubber is clean or it will discolor your gutter.

BB, if I was living in your area, I would come over with my bucket truck and do it for you! Hopefully in 5 years, I'll be living down your way. This weather up here is really making my life not so enjoyable. Yesterday 68, this morning 35 and snow forecasted. :(

I like the standoffs. Work great.

I like the bracket that Bob posted but another cheap alternative would be peel and stick foam weather striping.

Any thing to thick could prevent the ladder from retracting properly depending on the type of extension ladder.

Re: Need ladder suggestions

Maybe just get a shorter ladder. If you fall then it just wouldn't be good at all. The expense could be very well worth it for your safety.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll look into that bracket at Lowe's. Getting a shorter ladder wouldn't help. Gutter is 2 stories up. Someday, it'll get to the point to hiring it done, but I'm postponing as long as possible.

Take prybar, remove gutter...... go inside and have a seat. Problem solved :)
