Had the 02 Durango 4.7L ....in the shop yesterday....Problem was that the tranny wouldnt shift out of 3rd gear while cold....it would wind up driving the rpms up in the 2500 range..After a short time, usually under 5 minutes it would then shift normal....<br />Not sure how long this has been going on as I live a good 4 miles or so of stop and go city driving until I can get anywhere that I can drive 50+mph so normally with the stop and go traffic I wouldnt have to pay attention to when it shifted,by the time I got on the expressway it always shifted fine.<br />I recently was working out of town and the hotel was right next to the expressway, and thats when I noticed the shift problem, as it would still be cold when I got on the road.<br /><br /><br />Its under warranty<br />Mechanic tells me that after his test drive "cold" that the transmission is doing what it was designed to do..His exact words on the written report was <br />"It winds out normal operation of trans.Takes 2-5 miles before trans will go into lock-up,Checked for codes,no codes."<br /><br />So they are saying this is normal,But I have never had a problem with any of my other cars doing this..<br />I changed the tranny fluid as it needed changed, and it still drove the same way, so that had no influence at all...<br /><br />My question is are they feeding me a line of B.S. because the vehicle is still under warranty?<br /><br />What exactly is this "lock-up" he was talking about?

The "lock-up" he is referring to, is the "Lockup Torque Converter".<br />On GM 4sp OD trans, the torque converter doesn't lock up in 4th gear when the engine is cold. But they certainly don't stay in 3rd gear. Any chance you are missing a shift somewhere, and it's actually 4th gear that you're in?

I suppose its possible, I will try and count them tommorow.<br /><br />But the durango has a 5 spd tranny. Not sure if that would make a difference.

My 95 Dodge 2500 diesel did same thing since new. Dealer said designed not to go into high/lockup until tranny reached 160 deg FWIW

Ah, I didn't realize it had 5 gears. If it stays in 4th, then it sounds like the same thing deej describes above. If it's truly 3rd it stays in, that's a little odd, I think, but it may be designed that way?

heyttown, I would go on the web and google about the problem you face and someone who is a mechanic might be able to help you or you could read up more on your problem. Look into the dodge forum. Might get your answer there.

As being electric with shift solinoids you can open up a big can of worms as to not shifting right, but any trannie does operate smoother when the fuild gets warmer as some EXPAND,you would be running in a like low fuild condition untill this is achived.Your pressures are higher when cold and shifts are more abrupt{most of your wear happens then}.Things like a low or under charged battery, bad charging system can effect the way the trannie shifts also, computer receives less pluse imput when voltage is low, therefore effecting many operating systems even your trannie

Every chrysler auto I've had shifted as your mechanic describes. My Kia's chrysler transmission shifts that way too.<br />With the "tiptronic" or whatever in the Kia, I can force it to upshift with the manual gate side of the shifter. which I do every morning because I don't like the engine winding out like that when it's cold.

The real issue is: Is it different from what you have experienced, in the past?? <br /><br />If so, you have an issue. <br /><br />It is true that the trans. will not shift "up" or lock the converter until normal engine temp. is recognized.<br /><br />If you're over 30K on a trans. fluid replacement, you're OVERDUE.

With a 5 spd auto trans that Chrysler has, there are actually 2 first gears. You are in 2nd before you know it because it is designed so you dont feel the shift. That will make it easy to not realize what gear you are in.When they used 4 spd trannys the v8 would rev and wind through the first 2 gears and be loud as heck until it shifted.

Re: Dodge ??? Any mechanics in the house....

Thanks for all the help, As far as the question being any different from the past, I cant answer....For all I know it could have done it from the time I drove it off the lot.Where I live I have 4 or so miles of stop and go city traffic, max speed 35mph..So by the time I got on the expressway it was already warm and shifted what I consider normal. I didnt discover this issue, Until I was out of town, and the hotel was literaly right next to the expressway, so it(tranny) was always cold, thats when I noticed the shift issues.<br /><br />The 2 first gears would make sense as to why I think Im in 3rd gear....<br /><br />BTW the tranny fluid has about 15k on it at most.Replaced with Mopar type specific that the manual called for..."yippie" Just another excuse to charge more...<br /><br /><br />I appreciate all the good info, that why I love this place.

Take a look over at dodgeforum .com and ask your question there. I have a 2000 Dodge Ram and belong to that forum also and have had quite a few technical questions answered.<br />Hope that helps.

The vehicles I'm experienced with have an "upshift delay" when cold. It causes the engine to hang in lower gears longer for a greater RPM. The purpose is to heat up the catalytic converters faster.

Another reason you should let your vehicle warm up is most newer vehicles are using HEATED o2 sensors,we all let are boats warm up eh! bring it over to your cars, trucks TOO
