I Had a perfectly good running Freezer, with the door Rusting off it,.. figured I could weld on a set of hinges,.......
Last summer this Beautiful Clean Good running Freezer is Given to me,..... I Landfill the rusting 1......

This fall,... A Main Entrance Wiring Issue on the side of the house caused the Barn to go 220V,.. All thru the 110V side,.......
Boss lost his computer,+ Adding machines, etc.....
Of My 2 Freezers,.... My 1901 vintage Sears is Still purring as Always,.......
And, of course the Newer old new 1 Sounds like it's OK,....... Nope,.....
30lbs of Venison,+ maybe 100lbs of Garden is Lost.........

So,...... This is what I'm Looking At,.........
And,.... I have No Idea How to service these things.........

When it tries to Start,... There's a Big Load on the circuit,.. Lights dim, etc...Sometimes.....
Some other times it just starts,+ runs....
The Best it will do is +20*,+ that was when it was Cool outdoors..... Other times the Therm said up to +35*........
I unplugged it,+ allowed that Ice to melt away,.... the performance hasn't improved.......
I don't find any sort of Data Plate or Serial #s....
It's a GE Frost Guard Auto-defrost........

Is it worth trying it Fix it,...... Or do I gain about 10sq.' of shop floor space,..???....

i'd say if'n it's hard to start.. simple fix.. starting capacitor..

if'n it's not cooling enuff .. hard fix.. compressor.. need gauges, freon ( hard to buy freon 12 ) an a vaccum pump to fix..

I would check the want ads people are selling freezer's all the time.

I broke down and purchased a new chest freezer 2 years ago and my electric went down and it was far more efficient than my 25 yo that was nearing death. My old one needed gaskets and hinges.

Re: I Gotta make a Decision..........

Bondo, were you running it without the cover over the back where the fan and compressor is? If so, the air from the fan needs to flow over the compressor and the condensor coils. Without the cover, the cond. coil could be getting overheated causing your head pressure to rise. When things back there get too overheated, then the overload protection on the compressor will kick out. To tell if the overload is tripping, the compressor will be off and the condensor fan will still be running. Does your condensor fan run?

If you did have the cover on it, then the condensor coil could be dirty blocking good airflow. Just about 80% of all refridgeration problems are due to dirty condensor coils.

However, if the compressor was subjected to the higher voltage, some windings may have shorted causing a higher amp draw. With the unit off for awhile and cold, put your amploc on and see what your start up/run amps are. If they are over the rating (usually stamped on a metal plate on the compressor) then you have some scrap or need to replace the compressor. By then it is sometimes cheaper to find a replacement fridge. Good Luck

If 220 hit the 110 line, I believe it's time for that freezer to see the landfill as well. In my experience, compressors are unforgiving of a voltage spike.

Thanks for the input guys,........

I'll try a Good Cleaning 1st,......
The cover was On, til I took it off for pictures....

I'll give it 1 more shot,+ If I can't figure out whether it's the Compressor or the Fan,......

I'll Junk It.........

I've already got a backup,.... there was a small Chest freezer in the house I bought last winter,..The tenant didn't want it,....
Not that I like a Chest style,... It Does Freeze......

Thanks again......... :)

Yep I have to agree with SS The cost of repairing would over shadow the cost of a good used one

I just struck a Deal with a Tree Climber,......
He's going to Trim that Poplar down to the precieved height of the bottom wire in that picture.........
For perspective,..... The tree is 5 1/2', 6ft. at the butt......... It'll Still be 30', 35' Tall,... After the Crowning............

In Exchange for Me Wrenching on his Equipment...........I Like That.....

I'll also keep the wood that's over a foot in Diameter to use for Blocking,.......
The house right under the tree is going Up about 12'........Finish Floor Grade is about 22/24" above the concrete that can be seen beside the tree above......That's the Floor that's Downstairs out of sight, will be Upstairs, at the foot of the Tree.........

Bondo , those trees make beautiful boards. I seen a room paneled with it. As far as the freever goes I would junk it and I keep almost everything. The price of a new freezer is cheaper than the food you could lose,
