My bride filled up her tank the other day at the only gas station she ever goes to.She handed the attendant her Discover card to swipe in the pump.A few days later Discover calls and asked her if she made 3 purchases at the same station on the same day.She replied no and they said her card was used fraudulently. The 2 fraud purchases were made at 2am and 4am.The gas station closes at 11pm every night.I called and had a fraud alert put on our credit files .Should I assume that the investigation that Discover is referring to also contacts local police or is that something I should be doing??

Don’t know, but my feeling is that you don’t have anything that says fraud was committed. Are you even sure it really was Discover Card that called you/bride? If so, you should have the charge removed from the card and after that it is Discover Card’s battle to fight. You might inform Discover Card that you will assist local law enforcement efforts. Can think of what else you could do, except STOP doing business with that station.

Re: credit card fraud

We actually got a message from Discover and called them back at the cust svc.# on the card. They are removing the charges but thats not whats bothering me.Are these guys that stupid that they would use her card # to charge at their own station after hours. It seems pretty obvious that they are guilty. It makes me want to leave for work early every day and sit in front of their station with a few big signs on my Jeep that says something like "Come here for credit card fraud!!"

Re: credit card fraud

I’m not the kind of person that will waste time sitting in front of a business. I’m more inclined to just thru bricks thru windows and be done with it.
:D

It sounds silly but without more info you can’t be sure there is fraud. It may be there was a technical problem with the machine and the thought they needed to re-enter data, or data was automatically re-entered. You can go in and confront the owner, ask what’s going on. If he admits to it, bricks thru the windows, aim for their heads.

Was the amount of the 3 transactions the same?
Sounds pretty weird to me.

Are any of the pumps open for pay at the pump purchases at 2am or 4am?

Re: credit card fraud

change your card number asap! that will stop the old number from being used, and it is no charge to you. I change mine twice a year at least, but then I use it on the net,,,,,,

Re: credit card fraud

I work for a Convience Store chain. We have seen some pump consoles (that we dont use any more) try to re-send transactions that it "thinks" didn't go through. If it was for the same amount then I would think that was the problem. I would report it to the manager of the station so he can monitor his employees/check security tapes or even look up on the electronic journals to see what was bought etc. The more information you find out...the better. "Most" cash registers/credit terminals will show whether the card was swiped or manually keyed in....obviously it will be fraud if they were manually keyed in.

-JMW

Re: credit card fraud

Had a problem at the Walmart gas station here one time. We put $150.00 on one of those gift cards at the first of the month for me to use for gas to go to work. Do it about twice a month. Well, one time I got gas and got my card back right after I had charged up the card, so I know that it had $150.00 on it before I got gas. I looked at the receipt when I got it back and it said balance "0"! I went right in to the little office and said, "What the heck is this"? Luckily I had the receipt where I had just filled the card. The little scumbag that filled my truck had given me back an empty card and pocketed mine. They said that they would handle it, but I insisted that they call the police and have him arrested and they did.

Only the victim can report the crime... if the bank is taking the loss, then they need to report it, not you.

I would call the fuel company chain and get a hold of the store owner/manager or the company regional manager and let them know what happened.

Re: credit card fraud

My brother just found some eroneous charges and found someone using his identity for loans in another state? The FBI got involved. He lost no money but had all accounts changed and new cards issued. Lots of bad stuff floating around in the world today.

Seems to me I heard on the news a few years ago that VISA alone loses about 100 million a year to fraud and doesn't bother to pursue it, the reason, it represents about 1% of thier total yearly business. Apparently it isn't worth the trouble.

If they wiped the phony charges and issued a new card you already have a partial victory.

Re: credit card fraud

Got a call from my credit union last week. Seems that my card number was comprimised last October. Wasn't used but the number was out there. Why did it take them 6 months to notify me of this?

Re: credit card fraud

They told me Mastah Card was comprimised between October 21st and 24th. I remember the press releases about this event. Guess it takes awhile to contact 2.5 million people. Heard today somebody allowed 24 million Veterans S.S. numbers to be stolen.
