Any body done it in JUly? I might have to nix my Florida trip. Gas too expexpensive to haul a baot 4000 miles round trip. Rethinking my plans a little closer, with or without a boat. Need some feed back before my plan get any more "%@*& up!" A guy I know says the outer banks have been screwed up by pig farm runoff. I dont know IVe never fished there. I know the great lakes and the keys.

MADNESS - pig farms?? They have somewhat affected the inland estuaries but not the outerbanks - take a look at the maps the outerbanks are OUT THERE.

The bays of NC are great for fishing and camping - there are plenty of isolated islands that you can just beach and camp on.

The bays are shallow though

The outer banks are mostly known for the gulf stream fishing - about 50 miles out - tuna marlin etc out there.

Dont know what type of boat you have to make a run that far

beaufort - morehead city are also great fishing towns without the outer banks expenses

Stripers - drum - mackeral blues are all in shore fishing that are hot and cold - further out the fishing is more reliable (as reliable as fishing can be)

There are hundreds of shipwrecks as well from WW2 even a sunken uboat or 3 to fish at.

July is the peak of tourist season so prices will be high

There are plenty of tournaments as well but most are earlier in the year.

www.thebigrock.com

I have a 26 ft. boston whaler with twin 200 obs. What kind of action do you think I could expect in July? Dave

none
no fish on the outer banks :) :) dont need no meer furriners a messin up muh fishun.
actually about anything ya want. I did make it out in the cold today and got 2 largemouths about 2lbs apiece and lost two others. to windy to try the bridges for striper.
a decent day and your whaler will do the gulf stream just fine. you can launch in colington harbor or at oregon inlet. we have both seatow and towboat US. get one or the other. we also have a lot of thin water in odd places. like marked channels at the inlet. not uncommon at all to stack up and be in the markers.you name it and usually you can fish for it someplace around here.

rodbolt has it right - be more prepared to fish what is hitting versus fishing what you want.

Stripers near the bridges can be pretty consistent

I usually find that the 1st time I go somewhere to fish either hire a guide or charter -

but with a boat like yours you should be able to go anywhere you want

A good radio and LISTSEN as the seas of NC can change quickly -

good luck

You can expect to see me out there!!!! :) I'm based about 50 miles south of the outerbanks.

Your boat will be perfect. Watch the weather though, as someone above said, the NC waters can change quickly.

During July just about everything is running in one form or another. The main fish we drag aboard during the summer are...

Dolphin, King Mackeral, Spanish (spring and Fall), Cobia (got a 76 pounder last May), Albacore(Bonito or any other name you know it by!), Grouper, Snapper, Wahoo, Barracuda (yuck), Blues, sea bass, Tuna (not many the last few years),Marlin if you make the haul to the stream (50 miles off Hatteras, 65 or 70+ around Wilmington) plus the normal assortment of junk (Sharks,etc...)

Lots of WWII freighters and a couple of german U boats as mentioned above, about a dozen artificial reefs off the coast also (tires, boxcars, liberty ships intentionally sunk, bridge wreckage etc..)

fishing can still be great in the outerbanks of north carolina. if you like to surf fish and have a 4 wheel drive vechile go to a little place called atlantic take the ferry ride over to portsmouth island rent an ultra structure and ride up and down the beach and fish in some of the most productive waters along n.c. coast. Call ahead to Morriss marina to secure a spot on the pay ferry and rent an ultrastructare. carry all you cooking stuff and food no stores on island just 16 miles of costline and dont forget to bring the beer.

Re: surf fishing the outerbanks North Carolina

Went out there a couple years ago. HAD A BLAST. We primarily went surf fishing. We caught primarily croakers, but we also caught pompano, weakfish, and a stingray. I also went crabbing for blue crabs in the sound. We did go out on a charter in the gulfstream. That produced amberjack, sea bass, trggers, baracuda, red snapper, and grouper. (we were bottom fishing) We did see lots of dolphinfish at the marina when we got back. So, long story short, we able to easily fill up a week without taking a boat. We would just fish on the beach where we were staying. And have pretty good luck.

I actually just arrived home from the outerbanks about 10 minutes ago. I was staying in Rodanthe and fished everyday. From the Surf I was catching Flounder, small blues, shark, one small king fish. From the pier they were catching the same and alot of Stingray, on Tuesday there was a 41 lb 58 inch King Mackeral caught. Mostly was tossing squid and shrimp.

Guys........my sister and brother in law live on NAGS HEAD.....ya know the island that connects hatteras and ocrakoke....yeah thats right I'm jealous but I live in Charleston SC so I cant complain. Just got back from there this Monday. Charter boats at Oregon Inlet were bringing in some nice hauls of Dolphin and Tuna....very nice I might add. In the gulfstream the marlin were really tearing it up too. We did catch some puppy drum, but that was about it. Post back.
