Another sunny but windy day on Puget Sound. I'm getting anxious to get out in Area 9 and pick up a 5lb Blackmouth for the winter barbecue. Any area 9 fishing or catching reports? <br /><br />Gary Krein has been doing well on his charter boat on the runway between Hat and Camano Islands, but its too rough a ride for me to get up there on these windy days.

Re: Puget Sound Salmon Fishing

To update my own posting, I have been out twice since the 17th and have only caught undersized fish. I have been going to Possession Point and Brown's Bay. "Radio fish" are being caught in Cultus Bay as of yesterday. I'll try there next. Hopefully they won't wander very far from there.

Woodrat - very nice fish. Would that be a blackmouth? I haven't seen a legal size one in a while. But, my day is coming.

Fish reported on the CB are referred to as "Radio Fish." Sometimes there is a question as to their authenticity. Frequently the catcher's location and lure are described in code words.

First time that I have heard of the term "Radio Fish" But after fishing Lake Michigan the past few summers I'm well aware of what you guys are talking about. Amazing how many fish are being caught "on the Radio." And on the ONLY lure that I don't have in the box.<br /><br />After trial and error, and learning my lesson. Also doing some serious homework... I started catching some nice Kings last summer. aka "Blackmouth" to you folks out west. With some good luck and good weather...I'll post some pic's this summer...Tight Lines! Jon

FTR, out west, The term "blackmouth" refers to an immature chinook salmon.<br /><br />There are lots of terms for mature chinook salmon out west, including "King", "Tyee", "Spring" and I am sure there are others. In Port Angeles, Wa. the preferred term was "Slab"<br /><br />In Michigan, where the imagination is somewhat limited, they call them all "Kings"

I just heard a report that they're knocking 'em dead up at Lopez Flats in Area 7. Unfortunately, I'm at work!<br />Kingfisher

To expand on the "blackmouth salmon" definition, it usually also refers to a Chinook/King that is raised in a hatchery and held for a period of time so that it will not migrate to the ocean but stay in Puget Sound (for one) so that they are available to the recreational fishermen who paid for them.

I still call them "dinner" :D <br />The smoker should get a lot of use this summer.<br /><br />Also I would love to fish (out west, B.C.,Wa.) sometime. Question: What are some of the best areas and time of year for blackmouth?<br /> <br />What other species would be worth going after in your area?

Re: Puget Sound Salmon Fishing

seems the larger chinook runs are getting later every year.<br />last season the best fishing in Sooke,Renrew<br />areas was late August and into the 1st two<br />weeks of september.<br />we also have an opening for coho,(silver's)<br />and there are always Halibut to go after<br />if you have the right gear.
