Max RPM by the book is 5500..I would recommend 5500+ with a normal load for best engine life.
You'll need to get a shop to verify your tach against theirs.

I just bought a Tiny Tach. They are under $40 and take 5 min to install. It is digital and very accurate. It also has a resettable hour meter, so if your other tach is fine you can use the tiny tach as a maintenance remind

i am considering a new prop, (more rpm, and will then use old 1 as a spare) any suggestions as to which brand would perform the best?

That's a tuff call bb55...beings every prop acts different on each rig.
What exactly are you looking for "performance-wise"??

Well, I'll tell ya what I did with my 1982 Tracker 17 with a 40hp merc for more speed..
I removed the engine bolts and steering rod, then placed a 1983 70hp on the transom and increased my speed quite a bit...
Seriously, the TX17 with a 40 is way under-powered...Tracker does this to make them more affordable, but it makes for marginal performance at best.
Email me at ktsander@st-tel.net

Re: best prop for 40 hp

ok guys, im lookin in the bass pro shops catalog and am lookin at props. there is one that catches my eye. it is a propco 3 blade aluminum. there are 4 sizes offered for my application. they are all cupped. i am thinking of buying one in 12 1/4 by 15. they are 78 bucks, quite reasonable i think. are these quality props? will them being cupped affect my performance? is 12 1/4 by 15 probably a good choice? thanks guys

Yup, should put you in around the 5400 rpm range so you can burn all the carbon out each time you run it. Be sure to check on Iboats for their clearance props. Got my SS Rapture 15 pitch for about the same price. Shipped very quick also.

Re: best prop for 40 hp

Hey Bigbass55,

Check out the link to my post below. I am having a similiar problem with my 2004 Johnson 50hp on a 16 foot Crestliner. With my stock 11 3/4 x 17 prop I was turning at best 5100 rpm.

Its hard to say what will happen when you change brands of props. I went to a 15 pitch and my rpms went to 6100. I then tried a 16 and my rpms went to 5500 to 5600. I am now gonna try another 15 pitch with a larger diameter from a different manufacturer. Hopefully this one will work out.

I was told to get a SS prop over aluminum. All I can say is if I did it again I would go with aluminum. I have not seen much if any performance improvement with SS. It may help higher horse power motors but not so much mine.

If I were you I would try a 15. If you go with a 13 your max speed will be lower. 15 may keep it around the same and also improve your holeshot.
iboats has some great deals on aluminum props. Your stock prop is cupped. I would try a 15 pitch cupped prop. It should up your rpm's.

Hope this helps, Jason
btw, check out my other post http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=40;t=000010
I know it says 12 1/4 x 17, that was a mistake. I checked the prop again, it is a 11 3/4 X 17 same as yours.
Ooooooooops

Re: best prop for 40 hp

I was actually looking at this prop. http://www.iboats.com/mall/propfinder/index.cgi?manufacturer=Evinrude&rotation=Standard&horsepower=40&search=Product&chart=14&pitch=15.00&prop_chart_relation_id=1804&**********=936 231261&engine_id=52&pf_new=1 It will also fit your motor. I don't know anything about these props, but they do sound like a good prop. If you compare this price to what I've been paying for SS props. This is one heck of a deal. If I were to do it again, I would go with this.

Jason
