what im really worrying about is possibly losing water pressure and hurting my engine. is venting a sign that im losing water pressure?

Its easy to check throttle opening. Move the throttle lever full open. Remove the engine hood and look at the port side of the carbs. There is a roll pin in the end of each throttle shaft that sticks through the carb. Both of those roll pins should point straight up. If they point slightly forward, the throttle is not opening fully. If they point slightly backward, the throttle is opening too much. Either way you need to do a link&sync. For that, get a manual as its far to detailed to go into here. As I mentioned very early in this series, once you start fooling with engine height, a water pressure gauge is a must because you approach a very fine line between being "ok and losing water pressure".

Re: evinrude 40

i just went out to the garage and checked the carbs. the roll pins point straight up at wot. i am pretty sure that this is a healthy motor as the compression is at 125 and 125. we had the timing set and carbs rebuilt last year. i was thinking that i would gain more rpm by the changes i made. would a decarb make any differece? i doubt its ever had it done. thanks

To check for carbon remove the plugs and take a peak with a pen light. If you see lots of carbon, perhaps a decarb would be in order but with compression where it is I doubt thats a problem. I'm back to my original contention that 1) this is not a performance hull and 2) a 40 HP engine on a 17' boat is pushing the limit. I had a 16'MirroCraft side console with a 40 Evy and it would run 29-30 with two aboard. I used every prop combination and experimented with height and came back to the original setup. 12-1/4 x 15 aluminum. 5800 at WOT. Good hole-shot. It would hit 6000 on the dot with just me aboard. I bought a new 17' Alumacraft and kept the old Evy and installed it only to find it always struggled. I got down to a 13 pitch stainless Rapture (used it once) and it simply didn't have the beans to provide the desired performance. The boat now has a 75 HP Merc and it performs just great.

You wouldn't need to go all the way to a 70. Although you may want to stay with Johny-Rude you might think about a late '90s or newer 50 Merc. Evinrude 40/50 HP are 747cc displacement while the Merc is a 967 three banger and are nice smooth motors. The gear ratio on your engine is 2.33 while the Merc is 1.83. That's the setup my fishing buddy has on his 17 foot Lund and it performs very well. There should be a ton of those motors around that you could trade the Rude on although I understand your desire to make do with what you have. Try your local rental store to see if they have an inductive pickup timing light with a built-in tach feature. Check your tach as all your efforts may be for naught if its incorrect.

His runs about 34 with two aboard. I think its an '02 Lund 1650 Explorer. My Alumacraft Navigator 165 CS with a 75 runs 41 with three guys aboard. I have not attempted to tune the setup. I'm guessing its a 43-44 MPH boat with two aboard. Those are speeds off my locator paddle wheel. Haven't run it with just me. It does have Smart Tabs as its a stern-heavy boat. I will not mess with engine height at all as I dictated I wanted it one-hole up. I'm very happy with the performance and handling. I will tweak the tabs as necessary. It runs a 13-1/4 x 19 prop.
