Ok fellas, here are the pics of my hooter prop. Any knowledge of these props? As you can see from the pics it has no pitch stamped on it. Does this look like a speed prop or a good all around prop? Thanks for any response.
Joe

Re: Hooter Prop (finally got pics)

BMW Looks like a high pitched high performance prop...lots of pitch, rake, progressive pitch, cupped, ported, and thin leading edge.

You could "gestimate" the basic pitch. Since pitch is the number of inches the propeller would rotate forward (reverse) through a solid in one complete revolution, measure the diameter and multiply by 3.14 (pi) to get the circumference. On a 13 1/2 dia that would be 42".

Using a speed square (convenient....used by home builders particularly, to get the angles for hipped roof rafters) measure the angular displacement of the average part of the blade from an imaginary line 90 degrees from the prop centerline. The number of degrees will correspond to the pitch.

Mine's easy. I have a 45 degree angle which is HALF the distance between no pitch (90 degrees = 0 pitch) and infinite pitch (0 degrees = infinity .......parallel to the prop shaft).

So 45 degrees is half way between 0 and infinity which is halfway down the 42" circumference dimension which is 21" and that is the pitch of my prop.

A 17" pitch should be closer to zero (90 degrees from centerline ) and is 54 degrees.

A 24" is farther and is 38.5 degrees.

That's not perfect as high performance props have a variable pitch but taking the average of the blade angle you can get some idea as to what you have.

Eyeballing yours I'd say it's up around 23 +/- a couple of inches.

My best guess.

Mark

I Ran one of those last year I got from another gent to try, and it has very narrow chorded blades. For the rake it has, it doesn't perform well on "my" rig...pulled hard but had little speed for the pitch...

Kenny,

I think that's what's wrong with the basic Ballistic and why people don't like them. Like the 21 inch I mentioned is a regular Ballistic and has narrow chorded blades as you mention.

Now the last Ballistic I bought is an XP or XL .(don't remember which) in 24 pitch and the chord depth is about 1" thicker at the rear of the blade. Definitely more there to bite.

Mark

Mark, the diameter of this prop is 14in. This prop performs great its not real quick out the hole but on the top end it runs hard. The bow lift I get from this thing is crazy. At idel I can work the trim button and watch the bow move up and down about 6in. And at wot I gessing its running about 65mph. not sure I dont have a speedo. But I dare to say this again! I got laughed at and joked on the last time. I followed a guy on the lake on day that had a new 20 to 21 foot Nitro with a 225 merc on it. My boat is a 1983 17 foot Winner with a 150 merc. He left me on the take off but before we got out the cove and on the main lake I was cought up and he couldnt leave me. After following him for about 2 miles he stoped and ask me what I had on the bake of the boat. I said a 1984 150. His jaw droped to the deck of the boat, could not believe that it was a 150. Not saying that I have a supper bad boat or any thing but it sure surprised him and me for that matter. OH, This prop has been worked at some point. This is not how it came new. I will try to figure out the pitch. Thanks,

Ok that's easy. Your single cycle length is 44" If you put a speed square, compass or whatever on (across...front to rear....down the side of the hub) the blade at the hub, and the pitch of the blade measures 45 degrees off the prop centerline you are at 22" pitch which is about where I thought you were just eyeballing your pics.

With what you said about your rig, I get the same questions asked running 52 on my 17' tin lizzie with a 90hp. 150 on a 17 ought to make her squeal as your 65 attests to. You must be doing somehting right and with that kind of top speed, I wouldn't expect a dazzling hole......but that's what "ports" in the prop are for.

Mark

Here's another way to get a rough measure of the pitch:
circumference x slope,
where circumference = diameter x pi, and
slope = blade depth ÷ width.

It's easiest to measure the depth and width at the hub - in the picture below I drew a yellow line to represent the depth measurement and the green line is the width.

If you measure at the hub, then use the hub diameter in the formula.

It might be possible to measure progressive pitch at other points along the blade - I haven't tried.

Re: Hooter Prop (finally got pics)

Texasmark: the hole shot was a lot worse but I took the prop to a local prop shop and had the vent holes drilled in it. With drilling the holes it made a big difference. I have had up to four people in the boat, 2 full size men (about 350 lbs each) and 2 small children, and was clocked at 55 mph with GPS.

jtexas: I dont know if your method would be accurate because of the amount of rake in the prop. The blades on my prop stick out further than the difusser ring by about 1/4 of an inch, like shown in the forth picture above. I am still trying to find the tool to measure texasmark's way. The guy at the prop shop told me when he drilled the holes what pitch was but I forgot but I want to say that it was more than 22, something like 23 or 24. He also said that it had been a very long time since he had seen a prop worked up like mine is.
Thanks guys, will update soon.

Any thing that measures angles that you can get to conform to what you are measuring will work.

Clarify something for me. You said "Texasmark: the hole shot was a lot worse....." When? Before or after porting? At speed, the ports should have been inactive and made no difference in your performance......but I wasn't down there looking. Grin.

Mark

Re: Hooter Prop (finally got pics)

Sorry, The hole shot was bad when I first got the boat 2 years ago. The prop didnt have any vent holes in it. I came to this site and KCLOST told me about haveing the vent holes drilled in it. So thats what I did, It helped a little, but it was still not right so I put a whale tail on it that helped some also. I realy dont care for the whale tail but it helped sooo. The best thing I did was replace the plug wires and decarb with sea foam, this has made a BIG difference in the hole shot. I did all of this becouse I thought the boat was severely over proped, But I dont think so now. Every little thing I do it gets better. I hope one day soon I will have it performing like I want It to. Later,

BMW,

I have a hooter prop that looks exactly like that one. Mine does not have any vent holes in it, but when I bought it I was told it was a 24P.
Let me know if you are interested. Something you can play with at least....

I think part of your "every little thing I do....." is the Sea Foam continuing to clean up your engine. I am convinced that mine is continuing to get better and I have done nothing recently.

Mark

PS. Looks like we got edited. I was just fixing to ask where San Antonio, Texas was.
