I've read some stuff on this in other forums and decided to open a new forum on this topic alone. These motors were built from 1979-near present and cover 85-140hp. Operating ranges on these motors are mostly 5000-5500 rpms.I've been reading alot that people fell that anything under 5400 rpms is to low,and that around 5600-5800 is prefered. I have seen alot of these motors loose the upper ring on the piston and destroy the piston and head. I also know that if you run most motors under the operating range it causes higher cylinder head temperatures Is this related? I ask because I am serching for a new prop and this may affect my decision.

Re: Poper operating range for J/E V4 crossflows

At 5500 and below the combustion temps are pretty high and the motor labors or lugs even at reduced throttle settings. If that motor is set up to be able to reach 5800 the combustion temps come down.

High combustion temps promote coking which is that black, sticky carbon-like stuff. When the piston cokes up, the rings stick on the backside away from the ring gap. As more and more of the ring sticks in the groove the piston looses support and eventually rocks far enough that it catches the ring and shears it off.

Basically with todays fuel we find that a V4 crossflow set up at 5800 lives a lot longer than one set up at 5400-5500.

Re: Poper operating range for J/E V4 crossflows

I can't understand how everyboby in this forum run so fast. I've owned my Tracker Tournement V17 (800 lb) and my 115 Evinrude since 1994 and have NEVER been beat buy anything less than a 135 hp. I been running a 13 3/8 x 19 Ballistic at 5400 rpm and 47.5 mph. No other 115 has even been close to me and I fish tourneys in the area that have 200 boats in it. Alot of the people in these tourneys are big names. Anyway after the reed change I wanted to reprop to a 13 1/2 x 20 Raker to drop my rpms from the 5800 rpm at 47.5 mph I'm curently running. I hear everybody here running 55-57 mph at 5800 rpm. How come nobody here comes close?

Re: Poper operating range for J/E V4 crossflows

My 115 crossflow on an 18ft deep-V will walk away from your 17ft'r....it was a 45MPH boat until Dhadley set me up properly...
51MPH at 3600ft elevation is something..
At sea-level it would likely be 54-55MPH.
A properly set-up 90HP on your boat would/could be faster than what you have.
I've also figured your slip ratio, and if you are saying 47.5 with a 19P at 5400, either your tach is wrong or the speedo is inaccurate as the slip comes out to 4.7%...nearly impossible for that type of rig.
I know for a fact, as my test results show above, the Ballistic will not pull those slip numbers. One factor that would help determine the actual numbers would be to know if your speed is GPS or some other means.

Re: Poper operating range for J/E V4 crossflows

My numbers are from my gps which I've used everytime time out for two years. Speedo shows 54mph. Tach has never been questioned, and has worked the same for 13 years. This boat is used LOTS but is as clean as the day I bought it. With a 13 x 19 alluminum I pull 5400 rpm at 43-44 mph. I have tried lots of alluminum props, OMC SST's,Raker 18p(12 years ago) and nothing has out done this Ballistic. With the boyesen reeds and cool spring temps I've seen 5700-5800 rpm but no speed increase. I'm interested this weekend to see how the warmer weather may change things. And I figured the same numbers on slip.

the 13X19 shows 10.8% slip...very believable, but my independant prop test show the opposite results on the Raker vs. the Ballistic, not to mention the Turbo TXP and Turbo1.
If the engine is set-up right, at the correct heigth for the Raker, the Ballistic will only blow out.
I really have a hard time with the results you're having because I know the boat well....don't get me wrong...if YOU'RE happy with it, that's good, but there are many models of props that will produce much better numbers.

Re: Poper operating range for J/E V4 crossflows

I want more, and I looking for a new prop. The motor is up 1 hole (Cav plate above bottem of boat)and I have 6 degree negative transom shimms to allow for higher trim angles. Before the shimms I could run to the end of the trim cylindars and run ther all day. At about 2/3 trim the prop breaks the surface of the water and starts to through a rooster tail. The boat never seems to porpise and will take tons of trim. I know the ballistic is not the best prop, but it's the best one I have.If I move the motor up a hole it's not bad by myself(corners start to suck)but with 1 or more extra people the boat starts to porpoise at less than 2/3 trim and the rpms and speed are 5400-43mph. I was thinking 13.5 x 20 Raker would be more desirable.

Back to the cylindar head temps. I run NGK BR9HS-10 plugs is there a different heat range that would be better. Is there a better oil. Usually I use castrol TCW-3

Re: Poper operating range for J/E V4 crossflows

I would get the NGK's out and run the plugs designed for that ignition system. Champion only...QL77JC4's or QL82C's. That in itself can cause piston failure.
The Raker should be a good bet, and on a normal mounted engine(no shims) if you can trim all the way up without blowing out, the engine is mounted too low.

I did try a 21p Ballistic and you're right it did blow out,and at very low trim. I was junk.

Best deal I've found on 13 1/2 x 20 Raker is $291.00 US. Anybody know of a better deal. I wanted to buy here but they don't have listings for Rakers.

You might look for a Turbo Lightning Jr. 13 1/2 x 20. They have awsome lift too.

I wish they'd a had that Jr. around when I was playing with the 115...I'll bet it has more lift than the Raker...
Did you get my email DH???? 'bout 2-3 days ago...

Re: Poper operating range for J/E V4 crossflows

Are these all light weight "Bass" boats??? Maybe aluminum??? And running empty????
I can't see an 18ft deep vee running over 50MPH with a x-flow 115! I can't seem to break 40MPH /5300 RPM with a 17.5ft modified vee running a 115hp Johnny, with a Stiletto prop & engine up 1 hole from top.???
What type of boats are you guys running these magic 115 x-flows on????

It's not magic...I have 7" of jackplate, water pick-ups plugged on top, and it takes a healthy, well tuned engine, and ya can't run it at 5300 and make it work...it's got to go up and back to get the R's up with the right prop.

Re: Poper operating range for J/E V4 crossflows

Can't find the Turbo Lightning Jr. I've been to the Turbo web site and seen the Turbo 1 for my motor and the Turbo Lightning for V6-V8 but no mention of the Turbo Lightning Jr. Warm weather didn't affect my boat this weekend. I'm still running 5700-5800rpm with the Ballistic 13 3/8 x 19. I need bow lift,I'm trimed out to the end and it just starts to feel good there. I know with another blade design I can lift the motor higher on the transom. PS Still around 47-48 mph (gps). Like to see 50.
