I bought a new proguide v16 sc in 2003 with a 40hp 2cyl, 2-stroke merc. It runs 24-26mph with one person and gear and 21-23mph with 3 people and gear. I would like a little more top end speed to near 30mph without losing too much getting out of the hole. Not sure about the prop pitch, the only markings on the prop is '48 85632 A40 11p' which I assume is a 11 pitch. A motor upgrade to 50 or 60hp is not financially viable at the moment. Would a prop change help? How about adding a hydrofoil?

There may be some items you could change to help the set-up, but it takes 15-17HP to gain 1 MPH....with the smaller, lighter rigs maybe a bit less, but not much. It would be very hard to reach 30 with that set up.

Several people have told me that a hydrofoil will economically increase performance. The Merc website does not recommend this change. Any recommendations?

The Merc website is correct...although it may help plane out some, it slows your top end down.
You need smart-tabs.
Go to the iboats home page, type in "smart-tabs" in the search box and take a look.
That would be the single best item you could add. They'll give the hole-shot and maybe add 1-2MPH on top.

Re: Proguide v16 sc

I'm late getting into this and the thread's probably long dead, but I'll post anyway.

Beer30, I had almost the exact same setup, although my boat was an '02 Fisher Avenger V16 SC with a 40HP Mercury. Near as I could determine at the time, it was a virtual twin to your boat. Fisher is owned by Tracker.

My performance was exactly the same as yours. In fact with 3 people and the bow livewell full, it would NOT plane. If it was on plane, turning into a stiff wind would sometimes cause it to drop off. Didn't think a different prop would do much as the engine would turn 5500RPM at WOT if/when it finally made it onto plane. With the 40HP engine I felt the boat was an embarassment. It should never have been sold with that engine. A 50 would've been barely adequate, a 60 might've worked out well enough to keep.

In '04 I took advantage of some incentives from Mercury and replaced the 40 a 90HP Classic.

What a difference. Setting the throttle to 3000 RPM, puts it on plane in about 7 or 8 seconds. Once it's on plane you can throttle back to 3000 RPM and it'll stay on plane at about 20mph. Opening it up puts it on plane in a couple of seconds with a topend of around 40MPH. This is a far cry from the original 40HP that had to be turning over 5K to stay on plane at all.

It was an expensive way to solve that problem, but maybe the only way. I'd recommend you set aside the money you would've spent for tabs and save it for a 60HP or larger engine. The Fisher's alot of fun now, whereas before it was a DAWG!

I don't dissagree with more HP...I do dissagree about the Tabs..smart-tabs to be exact.
I can tell you from experience, the Smart-tabs on that rig would be like having a 60HP engine in place of the 40.
Call Nauticus Inc., and ask for John.....he goes by "Nautijohn" on this forum, but ask him if what I say is true....He'll stand behind his product and so will I.

You're advising to ask the guy that sells them if they are any good??

I guess we know what his response will be...

Just my $.02.

Re: Proguide v16 sc

Understand the question....Will the tabs allow the 40HP to perform like a 60HP?...Not "are they any good".
I run Mobsters on an 18ft Deep-V aluminum with a 200 and have ran just over 160 props in 2 years now.
See if you can stabilize an 18ft aluminum, non-pad at 60+ without them....
Also, there is maybe 1-2" of bow rise on take-off, and boat is fully "loose" on plane at 14mph.
No need to advise anyone of what will be said until their purpose is understood.
And, the sarcasm doesn't belong in the prop forum.

Oh - sorry - the way I read the question was that he was looking for an increase in speed without losing too much getting out of the hole.

And, yes, I can see how they help stabilize the boat in your situation (which is a little different).

Exactly...they provide the hole-shot so you can keep the pitch up where speed is best.
Nauticus also came up with a top mount bracket that allows the tabs to be lifted over center for non-use, or beaching. I took those brackets and turned them over, and I go over center to the straight down position for trolling.
With these, you have the hole-shot (better) like a foil, less the top-end drag...you have the typical tab stability, and as I said, you can have trolling plates with the brackets as well.
Didn't mean to be harsh...sometimes it's tuff to judge one's knowledge until we've been around (Typing) each other for awhile.
You obviously have some knowledge (good) of some props, and it's good to see another face with a good understanding of the subject..You'll be a great asset here.
