Hi im new here. I was looking at purchasing a 12'zodiac. MY intended use is in rivers, creeks and lakes. I am intending to use it for moose hunting. I like that they can be deflated and loaded on a float plane. I was wondering are they durable. How puncture resistant are they? How deep the water needs to be to run one? I feel i should get one with an alluminumn floor.
If this isnt a good boat for this or you can suggest wich model zodiac would be good for what i want to do with it let me know.

Thanks. :)

Re: Zodiac??????????????

Welcome to the forums Moosehunter! I know some about Zodiacs but there are many who know more than I do so I'll put my 2 cents in and others can add to that.

They are quite puncture resistant. They can take a hard hit on most rocks. They won't offer any competition to your hunting knife though. However, they do have multiple tubes. Even if you fully deflate one you are usually fine and can stay afloat and get back to shore.

They do hold a lot of weight and thus they are good for hunting. That said, make sure the 12' is enough for what you plan to do.

The tubes do take up a lot of room but being on the sides they do make for a highly stable boat.

From what I have seen the necessary depth depends on what kind of engine you are running. You can run in very shallow water as long as your outboard setup is up for the task. I recommend an extra prop if you are running in really shallow water. Bring an oar or two as backup as they can help manuever in small water.

The other concern is the transom. You don't want to hit the transom or the outboard very hard on any rocks. The Zodiacs do have strong transoms but rivers can be very powerful and must be treated with respect.

A dry bag with flotation is a good idea for firearms and other equipment you don't want to get wet. You might never need it but they sure are handy when things go wrong.

Good luck and welcome to iboats!

Re: Zodiac??????????????

all good points. one more thought...if you are going to be hauling out a moose then a zodiac is a great choice. they hold an incredible amount of weight. they are very durable as well. you can add more "rub strakes" as needed to protect the tubes further. you'll want a light engine i imagine since you will be packing it in a plane. 15hp or less. 4 strokes are heavy. i would suggest a 2 stroke since weight is an issue.

good luck

andy

oh, the "classic" comes with 3 floor choices including an aluminum floor. they call it the boat in a bag. i have aluminum floors in my bombard and love it. plus you get the advantage of a track system on the sides to connect straps ect.

Good points c5, I would go with a small 2 stroke as well.
