New boat purchase, either a 150 2 stroke Yamaha or a 115 4 stroke Yamaha. Recommended hp 115, max is 150. Price is $400 more for the 4 stroke. I am always a max hp guy, but fuel $ are scary. Any advice would help. Thanks

Actually, he says 150 2 stroke OR 115 4 stroke. If these are the only choices, I go for the 150 2 stroke.

If you have more choices a lot of guys are swearing by the new Evinrude Etec's and the testing data shows better efficiency, emissions, performance and of course weight than corresponding 4 strokers.

My .02

I have a 190DC Sea Pro ... original engine was a Suzi 140 2 stroke. Gave good performance in all conditions, WOT speed about 42 mph, mileage was about 2 mpg average. I repowered with a DF140 4 stroke, performance only improved marginally, but mileage is now a solid 5 mpg average. My rig weighs out about 2700# with full fuel, and I doubt a DF115 would be a happy choice.

I would go 2 stroke and less HP if you plan on going out in the Gulf. I say this because any more than 2' waves in the gulf, you will never use the HP and it will just drain your wallet at the pump. If you plan on going in the tidal rivers, extra HP is good if you want to run more than 40 mph without bordering the RPM limit. I am a huge fan of Sea Pro boats (after my 1st season on the Chesapeke) but it is important to remember that they are not designed for a dry ride as you aproach small craft advisory conditions. HP in these conditions is useless.
