I have a Johnson 1984 that has ceased to spit (****). The impellor was changed only 2 weeks ago and I have only ran in deep water since. The thermostats were removed. I work in warm water and was told I didn't need them. I have sprayed compressed air into the hose that brings the water out of the engine and that produced no change. Is there anything else it could be? Are there other parts of this water cooling system that should be checked?

Remove the water indicator hose from the nipple on the motor. Blow thru the hose to make sure it isnt plugged. Take a paper clip and poke it into the nipple to remove salt and sand. Look to see if water is coming out of the exhaust outlet at the back of the engine when the motor is running, or run the motor on "earmuffs" to see if water is coming out the prop. If water is coming out your impeller is OK. You didnt say if the motor is overheating. If the motor doesnt overheat your cooling system is OK except for the water indicator which must be plugged somehwere. If you still have compressed air, after using the paper clip, blow the air into the nipple.

WHen the issue started on the water I felt the engine area between the power packs in the rear where the water comes out towards the nipple. It wasn't hot. After getting home I tried the rabbit ears. No water came out and steam came out of the rear two holes. I only had it on a second. Enough time to see that no water ran through. I forced water through the opposite way and did get a stream out the other end so I think the line is clear. I had also run a pipe cleaner through the hose that connects to the engine and it is clear. I will try diconnecting it from the motor and blow some air in to this opening.

Since the motor ran OK for 2 weeks after the impeller was replaced I would assume the water pump job was done correctly. When you run the motor on the rabbit ears you have to let it run for more than a second to allow water to get up from the rabbit ears to the power head. As long as you have water going to the rabbit ears and they're attached tightly, running the motor for 10 or 15 seconds isnt going to hurt anything even if the impeller isnt working properly. It sounds like the nipple or hose is plugged. Again I'd recomend sticking a paper clip into the nipple a few times and then blowing it out. Let's see waht happens.

And put the thermostats back in. You motor was designed to run at a certain temperature and thermostats assure that it does.
