1984 4 winns gimbal removal

will i have to remove the motor to get the gimbal unit off the boat. the motor is a mercruiser 170 with a prealpha drive.the motor is really close to the back of the boat. i can't getto the bottom bolts.do they come off from the outside or only from the inside of the boat. i'm new to the boat repair any help would be helpful thank you

You have to remove the engine and the exhaust tube in order to remove the transom shield.
