Hi there, first time here, hoping to find some help :)
I have a 9.5 Evinrude which I'm told is a 1968 (model 9822E) and while trying to change the water pump impeller, we've hit a snag. The drive shaft will not come out of the motor.
Through wiggling and pulling, the pin/key pulled through the top of the water pump housing so the lower unit is off but the shaft will not budge at all. Right now it is sitting upside down with Honey-Goo sprayed down the shaft to hopefully loosen it up but after a few hours of soaking, it still wouldn't let go.
With vice grips around the shaft, I was pounding on the grips fairly hard to try to pull the shaft but that hasn't worked.
How can I get this da*@ thing out? If I pull the powerhead can I get at the top of the shaft to drive it out? Anchor?
I really like this old motor, don't want to retire it!
Thanks for your help in advance.

Pulling the powerhead will not allow you to whack out the drive shaft. The way to remove it is to keep the motor suspended in the air by the drive shaft and frequently spray penetrating oil on the drive shaft. It will run down the shaft and reach the critical area. Hopefully the oil and the weight of the powerhead will conspire with gravity to do the job. I've done this a few times with larger motors. It may take days or even weeks but it usually works. If you could add any extra weight to the powerhead it might help.

Gord,
You're on the right track, but it may take some time. The idea here is to remove the motor cover, invert the motor and stand the flywheel on an old towel. Spray PB Blaster (penetrating oil) down the shaft. Occasionally, you'll turn the drive shaft back and forth until it disingages from the crankshaft. The drive shaft is probably rusted in the crankshaft and there's metal displacement in the crankshaft splines. Try jiggling the drive shaft clockwise and then counter-clockwise then try lifting it free of the crankshaft. Standing the flywheel on the towel helps to hold the crankshaft steady.

Be sure to grease the driveshaft splines upon reassembly.

Thanks guys,
I've had the thing standing upside down for a few days now spraying penetrating oil down around the shaft, haven't had time to go play with it since Monday night though. I'd already heard that there isn't anything to gain by taking everything apart, was hopeful though.
I'll keep pouring the penetrating oil to it and hopefully we'll make some progress.
Cheers,
Gord

You would gain a large advantage if, instead of standing the motor upside down on the flywheel, you suspended the motor by the driveshaft with the flywheel about a half or quarter inch above the ground. That way, you have the weight of the powerhead constantly pulling itself away from the stuck driveshaft. It may be a minor pain to rig it up this way but I've done it with V-6's so it's not that difficult.

That's exactly what we've done. Put a hose clamp around the shaft in the middle where it doesn't matter if it gets scuffed up and then put a strap around the shaft so that it pulls on the hose clamp. Hanging about an inch from ground. Still hasn't let go but I haven't given up! :|
