jamie, it's like this an old motor that has had proper service and maintainance, can be worth much more than a newer motor the has been neglected and not serviced. if you can get service history on both motors, would be helpful, but probably impossible. i think one items is when was the last time they were run. if they have sat for a year or more there are some service items you are going to have to do 1st. go to the engine faq page, and read 'awakening a sleeping outboard.' this will give you some insight.

If you can live without the tilt and trim, I'd go for the 93' model. Newer, more advanced electronics and no doubt, better power...All this assumes it was treated right, as TD said...

Agree on the other replies, but I got used to PTT somewhere down the line and I just have to have the convenience.

The added cost? What is a fun filled fishing trip worth? Why are you fishing in the first place? Once you spend the money it's gone forever......the enjoyment is there every time you go out.

I agree with Texasmark. PT&T is priceless in many situations. I would pay a lot more to get PT&T on a used engine.

I also agree with Rick. The newer engine has newer technology.

The real usefulness of a 13 year old engine compared to a 23 year old engine may be trivial or it may be massive. Both have had time to become junk from neglect, both may be like new because of attention to care and maintenance, both may have nearly the same running time.

The bottom line is whether an engine has been well cared for and is in good running condition. If they are about the same, get the Merc.

I'd do a compression test on both, and if possible see how they perform under a load.

Hearing them run on muffs, means very little.

As far as on the water performance goes.

As stated , if all things are equal, I'd sure want the T& T.

Depends where you do your fishing. YOu have to evalutate your need of the PT&T then make a choice.

Had a Merc 6 inline with the PT&T and it showed to be priceless. But that was for me ... LOL
