Re: Mobil one Full synthetic lower gear lube

When I was on Texoma, we had a tripple 70 Johnny that shot parts out on one of our work boats....we didn't ship anything. In 2 days, a rep was there and didn't ask very many questions. within a week, we had a new powerhead-no charge. we had to install it, but the powerhead cost us zero...another reason I use their products.

Looks like you have to pay shipping to ship Amsoil the parts that failed + a $15 fee.
Like I said good luck collecting.

That isn't even an official Amsoil website. You really need to quit the baseless Amsoil bashing. If you've got some proof of why their products are bad, post it here and let us all know. Otherwise knock it off. Amsoil makes a VERY good product and they have thousands of loyal users because of it. If you don't like them for some reason don't use them. All synthetics from the well known brands perform almost exactly the same.

I am not bashing Amsoil.
That might not be Amsoils official website, but is that not their warranty statement? And does it not say "Amsoil Authorized Dealer Website? You SHOULD be able to trust a dealer for warranty info shouldnt you?
I stand by what I said. Good luck collecting from ANY company on a oil related failure claim.
Edit: the warranty statement I posted a link to is aidentical to the one on Amsoils homepage.....

And the sky isn't blue either....

Every chance you get you try to post something bad about Amsoil. I've seen it over and over...multiple times in this thread alone. Most any manufacturer of ANY sort of product requires you to pay the shipping to send a broken product to them. Amsoil is no different than anyone else. If they pay out the claim, shipping is reimbursed.

Bwalker, the powerhead was replaced because he couldn't prove it was NOT oil failure. If you "really" ask around, and research the product, you'll find there has been very, very few failures period, and amsoil works out the issues well and usually replaces parts/powerheads because it rarely happens.
Do I still trust it? yea, I do...as I said, I run in the upper 6000RPM range quite often, and "if" it was going to fail, I think in 500+ hours it would have done so.
And, as I said before, opinions are worth nothing if you haven't used it, and bashing isn't allowed here.

TexasMark, the bottle says: the AGM has exceptional anti-wear protection even with 10% water content.
AGM is recommended for fresh and salt water apps requiring a 75W-90 or 80W-90 API GL-4 or GL-5 performance standards, and it lists every marine manufacturer. It's listed as SAE 75W/80W-90.
Yes, when I switched to the synthetic gearlube, it was an instant 100RPM increase at WOT, and I believe that is because it just flows easier. I know of a few people that have had as much as 150RPM change (UP), and a few that seen only about 25-50RPM rise. I haven't heard from anyone that it stayed the same, except for those using syn in other brands.

....that's peculiar. I've read exactly the opposite about synthetic gear lubes in that they perform better(than conventional oil) even with up yo 10% water intrusion in the drive.

Di you actually read the warranty statement? There are somany condidtions on it that warranty denial would be very easy.

If I had afailure and I even suspected oil was the problem I would not use it again. I think most sane people would think the same way.
And for you info i have used a variety of Amsoil products, including 100:1, HPI, Dominator(in series 2000 trim) and Interceptor.

And how many failures have you had, and if so, please give me the file numbers they assign to each case and I will verify it.

I never have said I made a warranty claim with warranty claim with Amsoil.
I do stand by my comment that its insane to continue the use of a oil that was known to have caused a failure.

Yes, I have read it very carefully because I use alot of Amsoil products and will be taking advantage of the warranty should I ever need it. All manufacturer warranties have a huge list of conditions - as I said before Amsoil is no different than anyone else. And, we have someone right here in this thread with first hand experience that says they did a great job of covering their warranty. Are you calling walleyehed a liar?

Just because an engine had an oil related failure doesn't mean it was the oil that caused said failure. It would be nearly impossible for Amsoil to prove that it wasn't; however, so they probably pay out whenever a failure looks remotely oil caused. It's Amsoil that has to provide the proof, not the end user.

First off,I have not called anyone a liar.
Second by your own admission the Amsoil warranty like many other manufactures has a long list of conditions. IOf Amsoil does indeed follow this warranty statement good luck collecting as lubricant failures are very hard to prove.
You last paragraph is more insanity and makes me think Amsoil is a religion of sorts. If a oil had any part in the failure of one of my engines I wouldnt ever use the stuff again case closed.
I would wagger to say their are very few failures caused by Amsoil OR ANY OTHER OIL.

There are lots of reasons why an engine would have oiling problems with good oil. Maybe it got too much water in it due to equipment failure. Maybe an oil pump failed. Maybe they didn't put enough oil in the right places at the right time. Maybe some oil passeges got plugged up. These are not specific to a 2 cycle outboard, but I could go on all day. It wouldn't be the oil's fault in those situations.

Re: Mobil one Full synthetic lower gear lube

The things you listed are all mechanical problems. If a failure resulted form such problems it would be no fault of the oil and would not be covered under a lubricants warranty. Be it Amsoil or another company and rightfully so, I might add.
In Walleyeheads case the oil did fail, or at least the Amsoil rep thought so. If that is the case IMO it would be very foolish to use that oil again.
BTW did the rep cover this out of his own pocket or did Amsoil actually cover it? Was the power head shipped for inspection?

Re: Mobil one Full synthetic lower gear lube

I don't recall the location of the rep that came to Cedar Mills, but the Van he drove had Texas plates and the powerhead we received was put on, put back into service, and I believe it was around 2 weeks and the rep returned and took the powerhead and finished all paperwork, and I signed it as the tech that installed the new powerhead. There was never any other calls or anything else.
As with all their engines at Cedar Mills, we broke the engine in with dino and then straight back to amsoil.
We didn't have to ship anything, although that may not be the case for every location. The owners were very pleased with the out-come...all they were out was my time to install.
The owners were also amsoil dealers, so I don't know if that made a difference on what amsoil allowed or not.
At the time, I thought nothing of it, as it was explained to me by my boss about how amsoil takes care of the inspection, but required very little tear-down.
We pulled the head, and he took a sample of fuel out of the line, not the tank for obvious reasons.

My P&A book says Mobile 1 is not recommended for outboards. Not sure why. Says in there that it's recommended for the OMC/Volvo Penta SX outdrive. Hmmmmmm.....I'll do a little research on that one. We don't sell a lot of it so I really can't put in any more input than that.

It has to do with the material of the gears. In some outboards these gears are made of bronze. Most of the gear oils have Sulphur as shear cut modifier's. Sulphur is corrosive to Bronze. Therefore, marine gear lubes have to do without Sulphur with lead.

So, don't use automotive type gearlube in your outboard unless you are certain that the gears are compatible with corrosive oil!
