Re: Correct octane?

87 octane will be fine. No reason to use anything higher...

OK Thanks. That's what I use, but when I was filling up the other day, It struck me that maybe I should be using more than 87

Nothing higher as long as the motor is completely stock.

Re: Correct octane?

By chance i was talking to an Johnson mechanic last night and he said with the additives in the gas, (I'm in NY) that I should use the highest octane I can get or I will burn my valves out.

Does the additives make a difference?

THANKS!

Really? Wow!

Interesting since you motor has no valves.

What kind of motors does he work on?

Re: Correct octane?

Ive been using 87 octane in my 1986 johnson 110 for over 16 years and the motor must have over a zillion hours on her without any problems.

That mechanic is apparently a member of the more is better club. It ain't' necessarilly so. 87 octane is fine.

Holy shoot this built-in spell checker is very strange.
GOOD DAY ALL, out here in Africa ( South Africa ) we only get 93 octane unleaded fuel at high altitude and 97 octane unleaded at sea level as well as a fuel which has a lead replacement additive for older vehicles ( contains no lead but instead has a lubricant for older type valves and valve seats) and we have done away with the older 87 octane fuels.Personally I have found no advantage of running the higher octane fuel,Normal every day, lead free, around 93 ron. and the 2 stroke oil to petrol mixture is at 50:! makes me a happy camper. One of my friends obtained 102.6 octane fuel( which is obtained from the various petrol companies for road racing) and used it in his 200 hp motor and in fact the motor run badly, I tried to explain that that particular type of fuel was designed for a much faster burn rate needed in high performance four stroke motors and will cause more grief than relief, WELL HE LEARNT THE HARD WAY and wasted a lot of
money, so I reckon good old pump unleaded is hard to beat. Regards William
