We took the boat out this past weekend for some fishing. We had been running around the lake off and on (between fishing) for a few hours, and it was running great. But then when we went to start it after sitting still for an hour or better, it wouldn't start. Gas is getting to the engine. The flywheel is spinning. We waited in case of flooding, plenty long enough, still nothing. We finally did get it to start, and it ran fine again. Next time, not starty! And finally the last time we got it started, it would barely run at all, then died, and won't start again...Any ideas?

it has to have 3 things to run. proper compression. proper spark, and proper fuel/oil/air mixture and delivery. what have you done to find out. 1st check if you have spark on all plugs. then check compression, if you don't have a compression gauge rent of borrow one. this is very important and it tells the condition so the innerds. do this and post back. we'll go form there.

Another thing I'd add to tashasdaddy's list that the engine needs is proper timing of the spark. If the flywheel has spun on the flywheel key the timing can be off to the extent that the engine wont start. Another possibility is that the flywheel magnets that trigger the timing can be spun on the inside hub of the flywheel. They can be in the correct position one moment and the engine runs normal, then they can shift out of position and the engine runs lousy or not at all. Again, these magnets are on the inner ring of the flywheel right where the end of the crankshaft passes through the flywheel. You need to remove the flywheel to check all this. Grab the ring of magnets and try to twist them back and forth-if they move they're toast.
