I have just redone a 1968 Boston Whaler Nauset with a 75HP Evinrude 1984, When it is in netural it idles fine , but when I go to put it in gear it dies and I have to restart it in drive , any thoughts?

Re: stalls in gear

First thing you might want to do is check the tach and see what your idle revs are. Don't knwo for sure but I would think the engine should idle in the 650 to 750 range in gear and maybe 8 to 850 outta' gear in the water......not in the driveway on ears. (Sorry, don't have the manual in front of me)

Second, think about the last time the carbs were done and is the link and sync good. Ignition system good with a good hot spark at each hole?

Lotta' times it's just a link and sync problem if the carbs are in good shape.

Maybe a little history on the engine would help us.

Re: stalls in gear

Thanks for such a quick response. The boat does not have a tac, the motor was just gone thru by a local Evinrude dealer , Who is closed till Wed, just put Her in today after a long restoration and wanted to see if I could fix it Myself rather than waiting, if it was something simple, dont have the owners manual ,have one coming.Just were is the Linc and sinc?. Of course evryone at the YC was standing around this restored Nauset, with lots of advice , the only one that made any sense to Me was turn up the idle in netural. If nothing jumps out at anyone , I can just wait till Wed, having been restoring Her for 2 years, 4 days wont kill Me ,at least I dont thing so. The motor ran great 2 years ago when I bought Her , but during the restoration , I removed the Evinrude binical controls and had a MT2 rebuilt ,that would have been on the boat originally

Re: stalls in gear

For one thing it should not start in forward gear.

Sounds like the mechanic that you paid to have go through your engine did not do a good job. Have him complete what you paid for.

By the way the owners manual will not cover cover how to fix things. For that you need the shop or service manual which is good to have even if you don't do a lot of work yourself.
