Hi all - been reading here for a long time and now have a need to ask for help. I have on my deck boat an 89 Merc 200 EFI Anniversary Edition OB. Serial 0C110247. Bought this particular boat and motor about 6 months ago. It sat up for a couple of years tied up in an estate. Well after getting it I put a new battery on and fired it to see what was what. Did the smart things such as flushed fuel system, had to replace electric fuel pump, new plugs, tuneup, lower unit and water pump etc, compression is perfect and it runs like a champ.
During all this the motor would go up and down okay - seemed a bit slow but I was okay with that. Finally have it on the water and everything is going great untill I need to back up (and in somewhat of a hurry) and the motor just about jumped totally out of the water when I reversed a bit hard. I can reverse slow and at a very slow speed I am guessing the wieght of the motor is all thats keeping it down but if I throttle up much at all the motor will start trying to jump up. Then while at the dock I was testing the tilt/trim to it limits as further verification and it got stuck all the way up. I had my wife push/stand on the motor while I hit the down switch and it did eventually go back down.
Anyhow - any ideas what I need to look at and in what order? Should I attempt to fix this myself or trailer it into a shop and let them look at it? On all prior boats I've had I've never really had any problems with the tilt/trim and I am assuming this is also what holds the motor down when reversing. Thanks in advance for any replies and help.
