Re: steering really tight

Water and grease won`t mix,,,,,But,,Regular grease is porous(air pockets).Water gets in the pockets, when stirred will look like it`s mixed.Marine grease is not porous,so no`mix`.

also there are alot of different detergents or surfactants in grease that will make a differance in how quickly it disolves. Any impurities or other additives would also make a differance. The grease on my sertz was hard as a cows hoof and my wife and I had to row almost 2 mile because I couldn't turn the motor. Any more info on grease is well apriciated. Thanks

Re: steering really tight

All I can say , not being a grease expert. Is that a marine grease , holds up better to water .

Meaning it seems hold up to water much better then any ordinary axle/ wheel bearing grease.

I've never had a wheel bearing on my boat trailers fail.

Can't say the same , for friends who've used ordinary wheel bearing grease.

Ray, I've seen the old hard white "cows hoof " grease you describe.

I've assumed it was the incorrect grease for the application.

I use the triple guard , etc. on my vehicles , outboards , most everything.

Not much difference in price , and have never had it get hard, and more or less useless.

Then again, I am a preventative maintenance nut.

And grease often , especially on outboards.

Re: steering really tight

I used an old honer that I bought about 8 years ago for my master cylinder on my Toyota pu to hone out my pivet tube. It went from very rusty and corroded to shineing like a new gun barrel. Couldn't wait to get the new steering cable in. when I took the new cable out of the box it didn't have the nut to connect it to the helm. Now I'll have to wait again. I may end up having to by a new helm to have a cable and helm that match. Just wanted to let people know how well the honer worked. Cost me $14.98 8 years ago. well werth it.

I use a shot gun cleaning brush (20Gauge) and if i cant get enough liquid wrench in there by spraying, I tape a funnel to the end, hang it up somewhere and keep filling the funnel until the liquid wrench works its way completely down the cable. By the way WD-40 is corrosive. Great temp fix but will eventually cause corrosion. NASA wont use it in aircraft engines for this reason.

WD-40 can certainly do some harm. We paid a pretty penny to get our son's trumpet repaired. The repairman swears somebody had used WD-40 on it and it froze it up solid. It took many hours to get it back into working condition. The trumpet had sat unused for a year. My son doesn't recall using WD-40 on it, but the repair guy says nothing else can dry out and turn itself into super glue like WD-40. That is a good enough lesson for me to avoid the product, especially in relationship to my boat.

The WD-40 does a pretty good job,but it needs to be cleaned off real good before it sets-up.

I used a shotgun cleaner for quite a while but , was making slow progress. I had a very cruddy tilt tube so the honer got the job done and, saved some time too. I wouldn't recommend doing it unless you have a reall bad case. I sprayed pb blaster in there quite a bit to keep thing running smooth.

Don't forget to clean both ends of the cables !!

I spent hours and days cleaning the motor side, only to find out the fix was cleaning the Steering wheel end with WD-40 thoroughly followed up with a Water-proof marine spray lube (nice stuff from Canadian Tire).

Re: steering really tight

I finally got the nut I needed to get my steering put back together. I had bought a uflex cable from my local marine parts and repair place, they forgot to order the nut that goes with it. I was origanally told I should just order the hole kit, but I would need to bring in the old cable so they would know which cable to order. The next guy tells me I'll save $60 by just ordering the cable, but did not know you had to order the nut seperately. I'm just leaving this note as a posible time saver for anyone going through the same thing. Thanks Canada Fishing for the info. I have already taken appart the helm and it looks to be in good shape. I greased it up some but, I think I'll redo it. Remove the old grease and replace with new marine grease. I'd like to know where I can get the water proof sray grease. When I removed my old cable that had broken off up insde the sheath. The grease was dry and hard and the calbe was rusty. The removable nut on this new cable will make it easy to in and out, and the spray grease will make a good annual pm. Thanks

Re: steering really tight

I just wanted to pass this note on too any one in my situation. I took my old cable in to my marine parts shop, and we measured it. I actually just helds one end of the tape measure because I didn't know where you measure from and to. I thought about getting into more of the details of how its supposed to be measured but I didn't want to insult the guy by Implying I didn't trust him to do it right. My next mistake was. I left the old cable there. I thought my wife would appriciate not haveing one more pease of juck in the yard. This left me without the old cable to compare to the new one. I got the new cable on and the motor back on, and was half way to getting the steering wheel on before I realized my new cable was 1 foot short. Hope this might help someone save the trouble I went through. Taking off an 85 horse motor and replacing the cable is alot more trouble than double checking your cable length or hurting your parts guys feelings.

I use a1/2 masonary bit, with cutting oil,in and out the tube.I do both sides. But whn i can,the steering tube is changed to a stainless one. There are aftermarket companies that make them for all engines

Re: steering really tight

Hey canadian fisher where might I find some of that spray marine grease in the lower 48? Sounds like something I would want to have around to spray in my tilt tube for annual maintainence or on some of those places that don't seem to have lube points. I went ahead and got a 2ft cable after the debocle with my 10ft tube being too short. The parts guy said a little slack won't hurt. I've had alot of trouble removeing my 85 horse motor before, but this time I drove the top bolts back to flust with the transom. I left the bottom bolts out because there fairly easy to get out and will make a good guide when replaceing the motor. I spent a good bit of time after ordering my new cable cleaning off what I'm sure is 29 year old greese. I'd like to here any onfo on lubing around the steering or motor if anyone has any . Thanks
