Please take the time to register and give yourself a name or nickname, I sure hate replying to a blank space.
It would also be helpful to know the model and year trim you worry about lowering.

Why does the new bb let people post who aren't registered or logged in?? The old one wasn't that way was it?

Don't believe it was Sker. Maybe their idea is that they will get more customers by allowing Non Reg's to participate. IMHO, I think it is not the right way to go.

Loosening a fitting sounds good to me. Maybe a genuine Merc-O-Phile will chime in with a built in way to release the pressure.

Re: Emergency sterndive lowering method?

You have an Alpha I Gen II drive, Below is a diagram of your trim solenoids on your trim pump. As long as the electric pump and motor actually work it's very easy to lower the drive. Just make yourself about a 10 gauge jumper wire with a clip on each end.
Hook it up to the battery + terminal (Positive) and touch it to either the up or down terminal shown in the diagram.
This bypasses the solenoids and switches and most of the wiring.
Of course if the motor is bad, or the hydraulic pump itself, you will have to disconnect a hose. Do it inside the boat so you can catch most of the oil, and don't pump it overboard. Makes a Mell of a Hess.

There are only 2 lines, Just take one loose, if it doesn't come down, it's the other one.

My 69 160 only has one solenoid. Is there a way to jumper wire it in case the drive won't come down?
I'd never thought of this potentially happening but it could be pretty unfortunate.

Edwardh1........You have to have your picture on a photo hosting site such as photo bucket to display it on the bb. The file you are using is from your memory card on your digital camera

Re: Emergency sterndive lowering method?

I'm still curious about where to connect a jumper wire (single trim solenoid) to make my drive go down should the switch not work it.
Anyone?

Re: Emergency sterndive lowering method?

So to attach the jumper for down, I look for the green wire atop the solenoid? (color green on your diagram and also shown in the merc manual?)

I have a 1999 4 cyl MC with alpha one sterndrive???????

If you loosen a hose, you'll do two things.Put oil in the water (bad) and get water in your own hydraulic system (maybe not as bad for the rest of us,but worse for you).

Your boat is only 10 years old.You should address the problem, then fix it.Imagine trying to sell it saying "oh yeah to get the boat off the beach, just climb out, loosen this, spray a little oil in the water, retighten this and back on out"

Exactly what happens when you press trim down to un- beach the boat ?

Re: Emergency sterndive lowering method?

thanks but I was only talking about the problem IF you went to a very remote beach and the drive would not go down how would you get home?. Drive works fine now.

My assumption is that the most common likely failure would be with the shift handle switch for down or the solenoid, so my question was about where to put the jumper wire- this assumes the pump still works. on the green wire? right?

Re: Emergency sterndive lowering method?

Here's a thought. Make your jumper wire and go give it a try and see if your emergency jumper is going to work. In BOTH directions
