I am curious ... how are they in the <20hp range? They seem cheap in price. Has anyone run the death out of one? How's the torque/power?

I bought my 9.8 in 2004. So far i've never had any reason whatsoever to regret it. 8)

You will find that there are very very few posts here with Tohatsu/ Nissan 4 stroke problems. BUT, as with any outboard, almost always the problems are due to poor maintenance. There really isn't a bad 4 stroke outboard in that HP range. And yes, Tohatsu/ Nissan tend to be less expensive. Merc currently uses the Tohatsu/Nissans in their entire <30hp range.

Tohatsu-made outboards are the #1 seller in remote locations and worldwide commercial operations.

It could be price related, but it could also be confident brand loyalty.

Re: Nissan/Tohatsu 4 stroke opinions

Is there any advantage over getting a tohatsu vs a mercury? I'm debating between a new merc 15 and tohatsu 18 right now.

I did find a '98 Evinrude 15 with 9.9 decals at a marina, but I haven't talked to the sales people yet for a price.

Any feedback on a choice would be appreciated. It seems that in this hp rating, most of the engines are equal. I'm a little skeptical on the used motor given I don't know the history of it, but it looks relatively clean and in good shape just from what I saw.

cummon djc, enlighten us. without your wise comments on how much tohatsu's suck, we would acidently buy them and wast our money.

weird, seeing as to how they are the number 1 selling commercial outboard in the world. maybe everybody is wrong!

thank you for helping me save my money for sumthing else.
