I have a junk OMC 2.5 120.

I found a few Merc 120's, is this the same motor?

Also, Can I bolt up the 3.0 Merc that is still in production (read: easier to find) to my Stringer outdrive?

One more thing..........What cars came with the GM 2.5 that I might be able to use in my boat. I know certain things need to be prepped for marine use, but this might be a good starting point. Thanks a ton.

Basically what I am asking is are the bellhousing patters the same for all of these GM 4 cyl blocks, regardless of displacement and OMC/Merc label?

Ayuh,......... If you Strip them Far Enough,........ The Merc.'s,+ the OMC's are the Exact Same Motor..........

Absolutely NONE of the 2.5l Automotive engines are the Same,........
None of the Cars,...... None of the Trucks,......
And,... It's got Nothing to do with the Bellhousing Bolt Pattern........

Careful, there is NO coupler that will adapt a newer 3.0 to the stringer's intermediate shaft. There's a rebuilder on ebay that claims it, but I emailed and no response........
There are couplers to match Cobras and Mercs, but not Stringers.....
I would stick to an early engine with the 2 pc. rear main. pre 1989 or so.....then it will all swap in just fine...
GM cars with the 2.5: 1962 thru 1969 ChevyII/ Nova.

I am just about to pull my teeth and hair out all at one time? Well maybe not yet? I just obtained a 99 Bayliner Capri 1850LS Bowrider, Came with the 3.0 Mercruiser inline 4 cylinder engine. My best friend from High School bought it new in 2000, ran it for three or four summers until we had a small flood that over ran the roadways to our river covering some paved roads. This doesnt just happen around here. Here in Lock Haven, Pa 17745 Home of the Piper Air Craft Corp. Until they moved in 1982 to Florida. Back to my boat. He kept the boat stored out by his familys river lot some 16 feet above the normal river level. One year we got flooded above that level. He had the drain plug out of the boat, it filled the inside of the boat and the inside of the motor also. What he did after the water receeded was spray WD-40 into the spark plug holes and crank it over. Its kinda ran but not really. NO he didn't know enough to drain the oil pan. YES I now know these little 3.0 engines can hold about 16 quarts of flood water along with about 5 quarts of motor oil. Not good. He stored it since that flood around 2005-06 with all that flood water inside the engine. I just drained it all out of there last week. Not good. My local Boat dealer told me to drain it like i did. But then to spray WD-40 into the cylinders and after a few days try cranking the motor over again as did my buddy. I have and it seems the starter does crank over and spin just not engaging the flywheel. So i removed the starter motor from the engine and got my trusty snap on flat prybar out and tried unsuscessfully to turn the flywheel in any direction. No Luck at all. Clearly the engine is fully seized up as my buddy mentioned it was years ago. Or as he stated "Its Popped" I have wrenched on cars, trucks, SUV's, Chainsaws, farm stuff, mowers, trimmers, etc, for over 20 years now. But what i seek I can not find Rock Solid Information letting me know wether or not a GM 2.5 cylinder engine will go in place of the GM mercruiser 3.0 by swapping the heads over and maybe the oil pan. I weld and fabricate so if i need make my own oil pan then so be it? Can someone please tell me will this swap work or no. Above there are some hints. Nothing solid, Just hints. PLEASE HELP ME, I've been layed off more than 6 months and i need to make a quick fix to get this things running again and maybe the four famliy members i support can have a place to call home for a few more months after its running and sold? Maybe we all get to go for a few boat rides before i sell it to pay back rent? Thanks to anyone that took time to read my issue here. I apreciate your time and so does my kids and wife. Thanks much.

Ayuh,.... If ya mean a 2.5l from an automobile,... Nope...

It's a Totally different motor...

The Boat motor 2.5ls, 'n 3.0ls are Chevy based motors...
The 2.5l used in GM cars, 'n trucks is a Pontiac based motor...

Re: Engine swaps - OMC to Mercruiser, and 2.5 to 3.0

Ok thank you, now in comparrison the heads tourque sequences are the same. The pistons are numbered the same. The firing orders are the same? The bolt pattern from the 3.0 to the 2.5L might be different? Then again might be the same? So is it the bellhousing pattern that screws me? Or could you please elaborate on this matter a little better? The 2.5L pontiac motor has same distributor location, same rotation, same Mechanical fuel pump location, same push rod inspection removable cover location and bolt pattern. Please whats there that i am not catching?

Welcome Aboard latunguley,....

I should have closed this thread in the 1st place... so I'm doin' it now...
You need to start a thread of yer Own,...
Hy-jackin' this old 1 ain't helpin' you, because interest is lost before anybody gets to yer postings at the end of it...

Post a fresh thread, instead of this 5 Year old 1...
I'm sure somebody can tell ya Exactly what's different in the 2 motors...
I Know ya can't fit a 2.5l Automotive motor in there, as it's Alot more Different than you've discovered, so far...

Btw,... A PM is Private Message...
They can be sent, by clickin' on a poster's name...
Just like I'm gonna send you a copy of this post...
