Installing power tilt on older inline 6, difficult to install?

I was quoted about 5 bills for the parts and approx 3-4 hours labor. So now, I'm thinking... can this be done myself?

Does the motor need to be removed to accomplish this? On the older inlines the two pistons get replaced with hydraulic versions correct? As opposed to the newer style that have 2-3 rams.

Thanks,
Mike

There is a little more to it than just that.

1. Hydrolic pump needs to be installed in the boat under the motor well.

2. Hydrolic lines need to be ran through a hole cut into the motor well and through a fitting over the hole.

3. The pins that are connected to the bottom of your rams now need to be 4-5 inches longer on each side for the hydrolic rams.

And that doesn't include the cost of the pump, lines, and rams. I just sold my pump and lines, I still have the rams at the moment.

Hope this helps.

Re: Installing power tilt on older inline 6, difficult to install?

Thanks for the quick reply Craig. I was aware that there is a pump in the boat as well. I'm just wondering how much work is involved to get this up and going. Also, what parts should I look for on E-bay, and can this be done without removing the motor.
I'm just trying to see if the end result justifies the cost. My deckboat gets on plane pretty quick, but it would be nice to raise the motor if you find yourself in shallow water.

Thanks,
Mike

why not just buy a cmc pt-135 or buy a used midsection that has tilt/trim , maybe one with a bad or missing powerhead, and just put your powerhead on it.

even better, get a used midsection with trim from 1981 or up this way youll have the newer internall style trim.

or just get a diff motor

I just finished transfering power trim from a 1970 1150 to a 1974 1150. The 74 never had power trim and I was able to make the conversion in about 2 hours without rushing. I had the benefit of having all required parts on the donor motor so it was really easy. I cant believe the cost of power trim setups even used ones go for a lot. I got lucky, my complete donor motor cost me a hundred bucks, I started to drool when I saw that it had power trim complete with lines and pump. Heck, the guy even threw in an extra brand new prop and a steering cable. One of those deals wkere you cant get the money out of your pocket fast enough! Good luck with your upgrade. BTW motor does not have to be removed.

Damn Mike, that is not an option. I hated this thing when I started on her, but now we are in love

Re: Installing power tilt on older inline 6, difficult to install?

I just repaired my trim / tilt on my 1979 I-6, (I have a different prob now will be posting that in a minute...) Took me about 90 minutes to take down and set up plus a little line bleeding. I was really surprised how fast everything went together and came apart. This is doable if you have the parts even if you are not very knowlegable. My clymer manual DID help though...
I wonder if there are any mounting differences betwrrn the stationary motor mounts that you have and the hydraulic mounts I have though. The manual does not have any pics of an I-6 without trim / tilt
