15 HP Merc. bogged, then died...won't start.

Motor is a 2003 and it sat last year without running at all. Last previous tank of fuel had stabilizer in it and the engine was run dry.

Fresh tank of gas a couple of days ago, and she started on the second pull. After she warmed up ran just fine. Today I took her out and she ran fine for most of the day, then was running full throttle and slowed to adjust trolling motor for better ride. When I throttled back up, the engine bogged down. Throttled back down and it tried to keep running, then died.

Trolling motor headed home, maybe 20 minutes later, I got the 15 to fire and start under choke, but it didn't last long. Was not able to get it to fire again.

I've never been great with carbs, so any thoughts as to where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the carb could be gummed up.Try and take the carb off and clean it with some carb cleaner then blow it out with some compresed air!

use a rebuild kit, not the old stuff, are you getting spark, what have you tested.

I haven't tried anything or looked at anything yet. It was running great for a bit, I mean just smooth as a kitten, untill I slowed fairly quickly.

My first instincts tell me to check the filter first, see if somthing has it blocked, and the hoses, before I dig into the carb. Next step to pull the carb apart and check the screens and flaps and stuff for any debris. If any of the rubber parts look to be degraded I address that with a rebuild kit.

I'll pull the plgs and inspect, and check for spark, but the way it went down I'm inclined to think fuel problem.

Those are my instincts...just seems like a blockage problem of some kind to me. It was great, then it wasn't, with no degredation of performance in between.

it sat last season so it's been 18 months since use. you've got crud in the carb. if you take the carb apart, use a kit to put it back together, or you are just asking to do it again.

I'll do that...it did run well at first though, very well. Probably an hour worth of runnng well before it died. We'll see, my project for tomorrow or Monday I guess.
