I have a choice between a 25hp Merc or Yamaha, both 2 stroke tillers and both are brand new. I need some help in this. Which one should I go for and why?

Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to replies your RZ.

I have ran both commercially and have both right now. I can so without reservation that the Yamaha 25 is a much better motor.
The Merc 25 is slower, louder, doesnt troll as well and is less reliable.

Re: Mercury or Yamaha

Actually they both come from the same shop. I know the boat I want and this is the choice of outboards I have to choose from. I already have a 92 15hp Merc that has been great to me. But I would have to think the Yamaha with a 100:1 fuel ratio has to have a ton of improvements done to in in order to use half as much oil. I also liked the fact it has a built in garden hose attachment to flush it out.

Noooo never get a tohatsu .... go with the yamaha, but both are great engines, nothing wrong with a merc, I just find the yamaha gives a bit more power and performance ...

What Walleyhed said! Except the “best service center" thing that’s debatable. Both are good outboards. If you do the regular maintenance the one you chose will last a very long time. Good luck

I'm kind of confused by your remark reguarding the tohatsu and merc...aren't they the same engines in this lower hp rating?

Mercury or Yamaha, Toyota or Honda, Nissan or Isuzu.....ugh I hate these types of posts. Either one is fine. Buy the cheapest one.

Is either one fine when one is clearly better?

The Yamaha runs a little smoother than the Mercury(domestic production) and/or the Mercury(Tohatsu). But if it is a Mercury 25 built by Tohatsu it is a detuned 30 that can be brought back up to a 30 with a carburetor flange gasket change. Quality wise they are all equally good.

Is the detuned 30 a 3 cyclinder?

Re: Mercury or Yamaha

From what I have seent he yamaha has it all over the Merc in the following ways. The yamaha uses less fuel, is faster, smokes less, runs smoother, is quieter, the electronics are more durable, its easier to work on under the hood, the shallow drive/tilt is much more durable on the yamaha(made of metal vs. plastic), the yam trolls/idles down better, the prop shafts on the Yamaha resist bending much better, the yamaha weighs less, the yamaha has a choke that facilitates purging of water that acumulates in the carbs while the merc has a primer that makes this impossible, and the Yams have a better gas tank design.
The only thing I do not like about the Yami 25 is that its a little cold blooded and the carbs require tuning more often.

Blab Blab Blab.

Was at the dock the other day and a Yammie 60 on a G3 fired off. Thought the 3 guys in the boat were going to gag on the oil fumes.

Fire off my Merc 90 and you can hardly see the smoke.

And my Merc has 50% more cubes than the comparable 90 Yammie. Try that on your next hole shot.

So all this stuff is just guff.

The Tohatsu 25 two-stroke is the 2-cylinder 30 hp with a restricter gasket on the carb intake manifold to reduce it to 25 hp. Also, Bywalker is comparing the Yamaha to the domestic Mercury 25.

Something is wrog with that motor or hes using crap oil if its a newer 60 with oil injection. My 60 smokes very slightly at warm up and thats about it. It smokes much less than my Merc 75.
