Hi

I’m having serious problems with the power steering of my 1997 5.7L engine with alpha one stern drive.

I lost power steering and I had the steering unit replaced by a new one. Problem was not solved. Then the power steering pump was replaced by a new one, but with no result at all.
Also the steering pin (??) was disconnected from the stern drive but still without any positive result, the wheel still is hard to turn.
The belt looks okay, the power steering system was flushed, original quicksilver fluid has been used… but no power steering at all.
The wheelhouse is also checked as well as the cable –but everything works at just fine, when not connected to the transom assembly.

What could be the problem???

Re: steering problems

I assume when you say "I had the steering unit replaced by a new one" the steering unit is the one on the transom shield the cable goes through. If so, and it's still hard to steer, my guess is the cable itself is bad.
While it may seem fine when the cable is disconnected from the outdrive, and your drive moves freely (Per your other post on this subject) that amount of resistance is all it takes to bind the cable inside, usually at a tight bend in the cable.
