I have purchased a new used boat and motor and am thinking of putting a tac in. I am in the process of trying to get the manual from a friend but have not got it yet. Does any one know the color wire and location of the wire that i need to tap in to for the tac. I have a 1981 johnson 60hp 2cyl.

Re: color of tac wire

Is it a tiller model or do you have a control?

If it is the omc side control from 1981 the half round shaped plug below the key is for the tach. The gray wire is the tach pulse wire.

That connector provides pulse, +12V and ground for the tach. You can buy the connector and pigtail here on iBoats. Cabelas has them as well. Or you can make your own.

The motor is a console steer (not tiller) i do not have an original omc control. The previous owner put an aftermarket control on. It is a twin stick one stick for shift and one for throttle. I am not sure if i followed the part about the conectors though.

OMC controls had a three-pin connector just under the ignition switch. If you installed a tach, you could connect it there rather than running extra wires all the way to the back of the engine. Those wires are already in the OMC harness. Yours probably does not have any extra wires in it.

Look at the terminal block on the engine and see if you have a sender (gray or gray and yellow) wire from the terminal block to the harness (red plug). If you do then follow that to the control. If you do not, you would have to run that wire. You take the other 2 wires (regular + and -) off of the ignition switch.

Re: color of tac wire

did not see anything that color, but looks like some wires may have been rewired w/non factory colors. Where would this wire go to. I know you said into the red plug i beleive they are all still factory that far down the harness but i did not cut the tape back yet. Does the wire come off of a coil or one of those other plastic pac type things on the side, the power block that has power on the side of the motor (i doubt it), or from the wires that exit from under the flywheel (most likely i beleive), and is it still a grey wire on this end). This info will help me trace the wire to the bundle and then into the plug.

The wires that come out from the flywheel go to a terminal block which is usually black and has a row of 6 screws on it. You may have a cover over it.

The gray tach wire would be attached to the same screw as the gray and yellow wire from under the flywheel. It would also share that screw with one of the yellow or the yellow and gray wires from the rectifier.

Re: color of tac wire

thanks ezeke and others. I looked and yes the gray wire has been replaced w/orange, but saw a sticker that lables the wire block u referred to on the port side of the motor. It saws grey/grey yellow for the second from the bottom. If i am reading this correct and understand fully i can tap into this orange wire or connect to this terminal i found or find the gray wire under the console to tap into to get the correct tac feed for an add on tac.d:)
