My father-in-law gave me an old aluminum fishing boat with a very old Evinrude Fastwin on the back of it. I got it running ok by tinkering, but I have some specific questions.

The motors SN is 15036B-09992

I would like to know:
1. The year
2. rated horse power
3. fuel ratio (I've been running about 50:1)
4. parts availability, and reccomended suppliers

I took the boat our the other day, and puttered around the lake, and had a great time. There are a couple of operational issues that I would appreciate information, or reccomendations about.

1. The motor is not very willing to idle, and I am not sure exactly what the two adjusment knobs do, or how to adjust them correctly.

2. The motor will kick out of forward while cruising from time to time. It is also not always easy to get it to engage when putting the motor in forward.

I sure do appreciate your time, and help.

(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle va /lve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, wating for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Welcome Adam!

The engine you have is a 1962 18hp.

Fuel mix is 24:1.

Spark Plugs are Champion J4C set at .030.

Ignition parts, carb kit's, water pump impellers, fuel pump are still available for the engine.

First thing to suggest is a service manual....I would consider a generic type such as Clymers or Seyloc. It will give you the guidence you need for tuning the engine.

For sure, if you don't know the last time the carb was overhauled, this would be a good idea to do. Also a pump impeller and t-stat are good suggestions.

The engine has a standard ignition which means it has points. Your rough idle could be caused by old points which need renewed or at least the gap reset.

You can find out how to adjust the needles in the FAQ section of the site. Joe Reeves has allowed us to post his procedures there. Take a minute or two to take a look at it.

As always, if you have questions, post them here. A lot of good folks here that are happy to help.

No intention to offend you OBJ, but I would be running that motor at 24:1.

Lots of parts still available for that motor, they are relatively bullet proof. I wish I had one, it would compliment my 5.5 on a 14fter nicely 8). I frequently use a 1966 fastwin that I will be redoing this winter. I love it.

Re: Old evinrude info needed

Thanks so much for all the help guys. I had no idea that this motor was 18 hp. Can anyone give me an idea of what it should be capable of on the back end of a 14 foot aluminum V bottom? I don't think I am probably getting anywhere close to the power that I should be getting. Also, where would the top end be as far as RPMs go?
