Looking at a 1988 I-6 Mariner. I will check the compression and it has not been started this season.
I will be checking for old gas.
Lower unit oil.
Tilt and Trim
Any advice? What else should I check?

Any advice?

1. Will it it tilt and not wreck your gel coat?

2. Are you willing to use ear plugs.8)

If it is in good shape and not too much $$, go for it. They were good engines, but louder than v-6's of the day. The wrap around aluminum cowling does nothing to keep sound in. They are also fuel thirsty.

That said, I have a 197? something merc 115 inline 6 on a small 1976 15' Glastron. We beat the living heck out of that thing every summer. It is like the energizer bunny. It just keeps on going. WOT throttle is still in the low 50mph range.

Bob don't worry about the compression to much intill the engine has been run a engine will be alittle low from sitting around as the cyls will dry up, so it's always up some after running
