Resealing a '77 OMC Stringer Elec. Shift...

Called and got an estimate of $450 to re-seal the outdrive I got off of ebay for $315. I don't want to hook up a used outdrive without re-sealing it. The price I was quoted was after I told them I had the seal kits for upper and lower units, so seemed really high to me...

Given that I have rebuilt my engine, do you think it will be a big deal for me to re-seal my "new to me" outdrive or should I spring for the $$ to have a "professional" do it?

NOTE: They SAY that the drive is good, tested out (even electric shift was tested), so even if I spring for the $450 for the sealing job, I'm still coming out WAY AHEAD as far as total cost on the outdrive goes. My concern is (like many other boating projects), that I get into re-sealing it and find other $$ problems, thus taking more out of my boating budget!

Anyway, thanks!

If your unsure of the seals why don't you pick a vacuum presure
tester and check it out before you shell it out.

How many pounds of vacuum do you recommend?

Do you think having a shop do the work won't show up the other $$ problems ?

You should reseal the upper as well as the lower, and replace the waterpump before even thinking about using it.
