I have a 77 johnson 70 hp that is giving me alot of trouble when you first put it in the water it starts right up let high idle for a minute than put the boat in gear is when the trouble starts.you have to mess with the throtte to get the rpms up but when you get the engine to work it has all kinds of power it will push the boat 35 to 40 mph but after it runs for about 10 mins starts dying than all you can do is start it.it will idle high and low but will not take any load what so ever it will completly dye if you try to put it in gear and go.if you pull the plugs out thay are soked with fuel ,I have already rplaced the fuel pump ,3 carb kits, one new coil another bit of history the boat sat covered with plastic for at least 5 years

welcome to the forum!

first, here's some good reading on "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard" :
http://www.iboats.com/bbboard/bbBoa.../bbBoard.cgi?a=viewthread;fid=36;gtid=1035575

The part about getting a manual is really good advice.

Start with compression and spark test - post your results.

When you rebuilt the carbs, did you soak 'em good and blow out the passages?

Did you link & sync?

Did you dump the old fuel & clean out the tank?

What led you to replace the one coil?

What spark plugs are you running?
