I recently purchased a B&M oil cooler for my truck, this is the type with the adapter that spins on in front of the oil filter. Does anyone have any experience with these good or bad? I would like to hear it as well as some installation advise.

I would also like some advise on Tranny coolers, are they worth it and would the B&M cooler be a good idea for the transmission on my 96 suburban.

THANKS

I used them when I raced dirt track for a little extra insurance in the cooling dept. The adapter I used was by Transdapt if I remember correctly. It was aluminum. I learned that you need to REALLY tighten down the nipple that goes through the adapter into the block. If you just so so tighten it when you try to change the oil filter it will try to unscrew the entire assembly. I don't know what type of hosing you will be using but..... I used a hydralic hosein 1/2 size. It was secured using two hose clamps on brass barbed fittings. It was sufficent for me but to each his own.

On the tranny cooler- YES!!!!!!! the bigger the better. Being that you live in Florida run it through the rad first and then the external cooler. If you were in a northern climate you would do the oppisite as a auto tranny needs a certain amount of warmth to operate correctly. This shouldn't be any problem at all in Florida.

Sloopy are you going to be towing heavy loads? If not any size cooler will be sufficient. While you are at it.... hit up a salvage yard and look for old police vehicles. They usually have power steering coolers too.

I believe my truck has a power steering cooler, although it is small and has only one loop, should I have something larger?

Thanks

I would say it depends on where you are in which part of the year. Realistically you will probably need to run it through the cooler first and then the rad. You will be covered both ways like that. You will lose part of the cooling power of the extra cooler but it'll be lots better than nothing.

Is this a Ford? Lots of those have the loop powersteering coolers whereas most other manufactors don't use anything. I used a small tranny cooler on my racecars p.s. system. I really don't think it would be necc for you though. I was forced by rules to run a stock pump and we turned way too many rpms for them to survive. With a cooler a pump would last a season. Without it they only lasted about 4 races.

I ruined a transmission in a S-10 one time towing a 16ft boat. The dealership said it was because I didn't have a tranny cooler. They really had no reason to BS me because I wasn't in warranty or anything. After several thousand dollars for a new tranny I had a cooler installed and never had any more trouble. It doesn't get near as hot here as where you are!
