2hp johnson seahorse stalls after 1 min

I recently bought a 2hp johnson seahorse, saw it running and ran it in a test tank, it would not run for long and only at full choke, i have been told it is a 1985 model, number - bj2rcoc.

I have cleaned the carb and added fresh fuel, the only thing i did notice was when i drained the old fuel it would not flow unless the filler cap was very loose.

After cleaning the carb it runs a little better but will only run at full throttle and wont start again once it stalls.

The only other outboard i have stripped down before is a seagull 40+ and that was so simple, and i have been told that the seahorse is a good simple engine to start with.

I have just ordered a manual, but was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to try?

when you cleaned the carb did you use a rebuild kit of just reassemble. is there a vent screw on the filler cap. did you check the spark and compression. you are correct about the year 1985.

I have checked the spark plug and its fine, so is compression, i did not use a rebuild kit i just put it back together.

There is an air vent but it makes no difference no matter what position its in.

I tried to start her jusrt now it it splutters a bit.

Thanks

I have yet again tried to start her and she wont budge, but i disconnected the fuel line and then gave her a pull, she revved a little then died, what i cant understand is why it will do this only when the fuel line is disconnected from the carb.

You may be getting some kind of fuel restrictionin the line from the tank. This is rudimentary but make sure the fuel filter inside the tank is clean, the vent on the cap is open and the fuel shutoff under the tank is completely open.

You may also have some type of air leak either in the line or the carb if you didn't replace the gasket.

Take a clean spray bottle and put a little premix gas in it and spray into the carb. If it starts and runs while spraying fuel in, keep troubleshooting why it isn't getting fuel.

Address the possible fuel flow problem from the tank first. Remove the fuel line from carb, place line into a can and open fuel shutoff valve. Fuel should flow smoothly. Inspect, fix, or replace vent cap as necessary if needed.
On the carb, inspect float needle for proper sealing. Invert carb and blow into fuel inlet fitting. Air should not pass with carb body inverted. Check carb float to be parallel with carb body gasket surface when inverted, adjust as needed. A very important gasket is the Boss gasket. This small donut shaped gasket fits on the high speed drop tube ( goes down the hole in the center of the float) and mates with the lower carb bowl. If this gasket leaks, you'll have a very hard time getting her to idle properly. Raw fuel will be drawn into the carb throat, bypassing the high speed jet, flooding at low speed.
Inspect both High speed and Low speed needle packing. Snug packing nuts to insure that there's no air leaks. Set initial high and low speed needles prior to starting.

hi! I also have a 2HP Sea Horse.
Can you tell me how to remove the bell-shaped peice that covers the magnetos? I remove the big bolt on top of it but then it does not move... Do I need a special tool? did I forget something?
thanks!
Pascal.

Pascal,
The piece you describe is called the flywheel. You'll need a tool called a harmonic balancer puller to remove the flywheel. The puller uses three 1/4 x20 bolts in the three holes on top of the flywheel. Just about any auto parts store will have the puller.

Not to be nit-picky, but, it's best to start your own new thread instead of jumping into someone elses thread. You'll get faster replies and it helps to keep everybody's problems seperate. When you do start your own thread, try to keep all of your replies to that one thread (regarding that motor). If you open multiple threads about the same motor, it's really hard to follow your progress. Just trying to help you get the fastest help for your problems.

Good luck and let us hear how things work out for you. d:)
