What year did they switch HP ratings?

I was wondering what year it was that they stopped rating the HP off the crank and went to Prop HP? I have a 1973 115 Evinrude with a 1977 115 Powerhead which I think is the same as the newer 90 horsepower motors....right?

Thanks,
Jason

I believe the mid eighties on most motors. Others will know for sure....

I sure don't know, but I DO know it sure applied a heck of a lot more to cars, as it was measured without (before) all those accessories attached. Boat motors have very little parasitic drag from all the junk added noawadays on cars, plus transmissions and axles, so there won't be much difference. Plus they all (and still do) exaggerate anyway

The first OMC outboard was changed in 1985. But not all were changed in 1985. The 115 crossflow in 85 was called the 115 although it was identical to the 1984 140 crossflow. 1985 was the first year for the loopers (V4 & V8). V4, V6 & V8 loopers were all propshaft rated.

What do you think my 1982 235 HP powerhead is similar to in a prop-rated engine?
