Seized Head Cover bolts

I need to remove the cylinder head cover (not the head itself) on my Suzuki DT 40 to clean up the water passages and also need to check the thermostat.

I only got as far as trying to loosen the first bolt on the thermostat cover. It's real tight and I'm pretty sure the bolt is going to shear off of I try to force it.

What are my options here? If it shears off I know I'll have to drill out the broken bolt and retap the hole, or maybe I can get it out with and "easy out" tool. Any other tips and tricks that might help avoid breaking the bolt?

Cheers

use heat, mapp gas at a minimum propane just is not hot enough. if they break DO NOT attempt an easy out. use a drill and tap or drill and heli-coil kit.
good luck.

Thanks! I have never liked "easy out" myself. Last time I used one on a motorcyle engine cover it expanded the bolt so that the case cracked. Is that what you are refering to here?

If you break the easy-out you are really in a bind as they can't be drilled.
