You have what is know as an OMC Stringer Drive. It is an electric shift gearcase, and requires OMC/BRP Premium Gearcase Oil.

What do you need to know ?

I need a rebuild on the lower unit and was looking for parts or rebuilt. Would it be a 400 or a 800 and can I use either if I find replacement. Thank You for your reply

With a manual and proper parts ID, you can look on ebay, check internet sights like this;

http://www.sterndrive.info/index.html

Or just call Steve Ryan at Ryans Marine in Portland Oregon and tell him what you have. Your drive is neither a 400 or 800. Those were numbers applied to the next two generations of Hydro-Mechanical and Mechanical shift drives.(starting 1978 til the Cobras)

Yours is a 1975 Electric Shift Stringer drive. You could have a low profile or a high profile drive. When they went to the cable shift drives they only had one profile but two different strengths of units.(400 & 800) He can tell you how to tell them apart but I believe the lower units are the same for either.

Steve is probably the most knowledgable OMC guy that you will find. People send him OMC drives from all over the country to repair. Even dealers ship him units to fix. He also sends parts out all over and if they are hard to find, he'll find them if they exist.

If you call him, tell him that Gyro Gearloose suggested you call. 503 282 8807

First realize this boat is thirty-two years old. Also realize OMC went out of business in 1999.Bombardier purchased them, and has NO interest in continuing sterndrive parts.Yes,they are out there, online.$$$$$$$

Get yourself an OMC GENUINE Manual and tear her down and see what you need.Aftermarket manuals will leave you treading water. But you need a starting point,so here it is.

For the record Boomer, the gear ratios are different in the 400 and 800 lowers.

I knew that KaGee, but if I'm not mistaken the Electrics are often referred to as 400's and 800's, which they are not. I'm not sure how they referred to the big and small ratio drives in the electric era.

You have a low profile Electric ndake.

You can also convert to the later 800 Mechanical outdrive without having to change your intermediate housing. If your boat had required the high profile unit, there is no equivalent in the later 800/400 series.

Re: OMC Outdrive, Witch one do I have

For future reference I found a listing on Ebay that has a picture of a low and high profile Exhaust Housing. If someone knows how to move the picture hear someplace so next time someone needs to know the difference in could help. The item number is 110007503650

The picture did help me see what I was looking for.

Thank you for all your help

Here they are ndake. These, however are just the exhausts housings. The corresponding High/Low upper gear cases are not shown. Also as I mentioned before the lowers are the same for both profiles.
