I have an old merc 85hp with power trim. The system has two cylinders that raise and lower the engine and the pump is part number SAE J1171.The sytem is getting air from somewhere and I am currently sealing everything with plumbers tape.

My question is:

What is the proper prcedure for bleeding this system?

Frustrated

Plumbers tape a hyd. don't work well togerther. The system must be filled in the up position and in most cases is self bleeding, but if you look on the top of the cyls many have a slotted screw to bleed them

Ive got a 78 IL6 that has 2 cylinders and a separate pump/motor (I think they call it the old 'A' type pump). That system bleeds by filling the resevior with 10w-40 oil while the motor is in the up position. leave the fill screw off, then cycle the TT up and down a few times. the system is self bleeding. top it off and thats it.

OK,

the plumbers tape was a bust but I managed to get the links to quit weeping. I have been told and read on this site that 5W-30 is better than 10W-40.

Getting closer,

On my 1976 115 HP the manual says to use 10w-30 or 10w-40. The pump itself says to use 20w. I use 10w-30 with no problems.

It has stopped leaking and seems to be working great,

actually better than ever.

For the record I used (motor oil).

Should the fittings start to leak again is there any tricks that might help? Obviously the plumbers tape was a bad idea but would like to try something before I replace the fittings next season.
