Just bought the boat, motor runs fine. Problem is that if the cap on the oil reservoir isn't opened after operation and the pressure is released the carbs will slowly fill with
oil over time making it very hard to start.(check valve?)
I was also wondering what the manufacturer suggests
for the proper oil/gas ratio and what octane?

Thanks, Mike

i have a 2005 150 xr6 and per my manual it states that you can run 87 octane gas but 89 is preferred for engine clenliness.

You should have oil injection for that engine but im assuming you disassembled it, so run 50:1 with merc premium plus 2 stroke oil or something of the equivilant.

I run 89 and have ran merc premium plus synthetic blend since it was new and it runs excellent. It hasn't missed a beat.

There is a valve that bleeds the pressure from the injection system. I'm not sure on that model motor where it is located. Check the system out in your manual.

Re: 1996 150 hp XR6 oil problems

Looking at the oil flow diagram there are three check valves. The two hoses from the remote tank come into the engine and the one with the blue stripe goes to the 4psi check valve. This valve lets air into the system if your remote tank hose gets pinched so the tank on the engine can continue to flow. The other black hose goes to the engine which is a one way valve that lets crankcase air pressure into the remote tank and pressurizes the tank so oil can flow to the oil tank on the engine via the hose with the blue stripe. The last check valve is the 2psi check valve that tee's into the fuel line just before the fuel pump. It's on the port side near the fuel pump and the hose comes from the oil pump. The check valve may be part of the tee. I'm guessing the only one that could cause this problem is the 2psi valve. A way to check this would be to remove the fuel line from this tee and see if oil drips out(engine not running). You could also take a vacuum gauge and apply vacuum and see if you get oil at 2 psi like its suppose to.
