I installed a new lower unit this weekend, after the instalation i notice the speedometer no longer works. Where are some places I can check for problems? The hose that connects to the lower powerunit is connected.

Thanks
Bryan

Re: speedometer broke

Mabe you have a different style speedo, but I believe most speedos are not attached to the lower unit.

They have a plastick pick up unit that usually hangs 1.5 - 3" below the the bottom of the boat and is usually bolted to the back of the boat. There should be a hose that attaches to the pickup unit and runs all the way to the back of your speedo. make sure this hose is connected and has no visible cracks or breaks. also make sure the input to the pick up unit is not pluged.

hope this helps

Thanks for the reply..

the hose that runs from the back of the speedometer connects to the back of the motor and goes into the motor, its not plugged up. Maybe something electrical in the motor is wrong?

Re: speedometer broke

Speedometers have no electrical components except for the light. The lower unit pickup is probably plugged. Disconnect the tube and blow into it. If the speedometer needle moves, its ok and the problem is a plugged pickup. Not uncommon.

hmm I don't understand why it goes into my engine then it has lik e a square connector that it goes into on the back of it. I will look again tonight and try your test, maybe I am missing something, i really didn't look into it too closely. Thanks for the help.

Re: speedometer broke

Speedometers work on water pressure (forward movement of the boat -- not from the water pump). Some engines have the pickup built in (like yours). If the engine doesn't have one, you need the externally mounted pitot that attaches to the back of the boat. Again, there are no electrics involved. Are you sure you have the speedo tube connected at the correct spot.
