mercury 500/ 50hp blueband does water come out exust

brought another mercury blue band thunderbolt today i have tried it in tank water comes out of tale tale ok and comes out of exust system is this as it should be or have more troubles also the stainless bar that looks as if it goes to the gearbox and onto the engine brackett about 9 inchs long maybe a little longer i just want to know what it does

Does that stainless bar appear to be the reverse lock? If so, the motor should be locked down when it is not in forward. Putting the motor into forward releases the reverse lock.

Water should come out of the prop and gratings above the prop, as well as the teletale. If you run it in a test tank, it will be hard to tell.

thanks chris i think its the gratings above that sounds about right
the stainless bar sound right too but came of in my hand as there was not anything attatched to it
i looked on my other one but that is solid with spring on top bit rusty it also has two nuts on it and looks like a bicycle cottle pin nothing on the other end

is it the trim pin that goes thru the transom bracket, for the reverse lock to lock on to?

yes this sound good, it does go through the transom bracket
i will look it up does it mean i have to have this repaired before use

took boat out for a run only problem was it made a horrible noise when put in forward gear is this i have the revs to high sounded like gear crash only happened when putting in gear after that ok

I think the Gear noise you hear is normal.as long as its not to bad...every Merc outboard I have every seen does this.....just kinda clunks into gear
